26 July 2018
The idea is that wireless charging coils could be used to transfer power between say a MacBook and a dead iPhone.

Wow, this guys really are innovative. Nope, i was just jokimg.

If technology allows it, they could put the coils on the side of the phone and the laptop that way you can charge the phone while using the laptop on a table by just putting the phone beside it, the phone and the laptop can still be operated and not on the way with each other.

Not at all. Already wireless charging is not efficient, instead of charging up the other device, you end up using more battery to charge that little bit more, why not just use a damm cable.

i don't know about this... doesn't seem useful enough to be worth the extra cost and internal complexity. in most situations, a decent power bank should be preferable and the remaining use cases that i could think of just don't seem common or important enough

Just shows Apple knows their batteries are not going to last long.

Grow up, man. If you still can't understand, you need some serious education.

However, this is clearly modification of Sony's wireless device to device power sharing technology.

It is always nice with extra options in principle.

BUT what people tend to forget about wireless charging is that about HALF the input gets wasted as heat.
Heat and charging is a sure way to shorten the overall battery life - so really a bad idea for non removable batteries... (Part of many brands "planned obsolescence")
IF you want to use wireless charging, I would recommend to NOT use a powerful charger, but a small one. Yes this gives slower charging BUT also less extra heating of the devices battery.

Generally a cable would be a better option!
But hey the silly sods do not even offer a plug for headphones...

(Though my BB Priv got wireless charging, I never use it... )

Anonymous, 27 Jul 2018Based on NFC wireless charging patent of Sony I supposeNah nfc is contact based, this can charge wirelessly read the title.

I have been waiting for almost a decade for this tech and I am not sure how much longer I would have to wait.

Why the he'll would anyone want this surly to fit the 3 wireless charging pads on a laptop base would make it large so much so it would be a pain to use the keyboard and if they small sized the keyboard then it would be a pain to use... this idea is terrible.. I mean do they really pay people to design stuff like this.. Why not put 3 pads at the top so you can still use the dam keyboard and do work while the phone charges and doesn't get in your way... or is that to hard to figure out... or just put 1 down the side... my issue with this is surly you would charge it faster plugging it in to the wall socket if your laptop is already plugged in if no room.. then use a port on the laptop...

Apple running out of ideas... feels like a step backwards
Why not design a port for a wireless charging pad to be plugged into that support 3 devices so it's to the side of the laptop. Which is thin and can be easily rolled up/ folded.. so it's portable

Anonymous, 27 Jul 2018Really, it's a worthless patent. There are lots of high cap... more100% agree well said

Really, it's a worthless patent. There are lots of high capacity powerbanks that duplicate as wireless chargers. Why waste your laptop's battery to charge your phone? Why bring a laptop as a wireless charger for your phone when you can bring a smaller, more convenient wireless charging high capacity powerbank? I don't see any practical use of this Apple patent that removes battery life from a useful productivity device and transfer battery power wastefully through wireless charging.

When your phone dies, you place it on your laptop and then you have TWO devices that can't be used. I'm sure it's compatible with nothing. I can't wait to hear people walking around the office asking if they can put their dead phone on your laptop for an hour.

For once, i must say brilliant idea
Since there are many people placing their phone on their laptops deck, so instead of fumbling with cable, a wireless charging deck is great idea
