Sunday debate: Are phone cases necessary?

Is there a case for phone cases?

Sort by:

Yes, of late they are, necessary. It was not the case back in the golden days though, as phones were of tank-like built. Nowadays phone come with glass, let us just laugh on that for one minute.

Phones manufacturers choose to sell more spare screens over designing drop proof phones.

Thoses glass back supposed to provide wireless charging are pure bullshit, honnestly no one is using that Wireless thing, plus it also destroy battery life.

It must be acquired as a fact that phones aren't designed to be dropped, but they will be, dropped.
Can you imagine a Car brand which sell cars without any safety feature and tell you "Just don't crash it"' ?

Well that's exactly what phones brands are doing. But even if you won't die by crashing your phone, you should be upset.

They sell you a 1000$ phone, which is build for 300$, but they will sold you the spare screen for 350$.

So you litterally have to buy a case, and of course not the case sold by the brand of your phone, because again, phones brands choose to sell spare screens over designing drop-proof phones ; So the case they provide to you offer shitty protection.

So you have to buy from a brand which actually provide proper, drop-proof cases.

Some think they can survive with just a screen protector, but the chassis of today's phones are so thin that they can't absorb the energy from the shock of a drop. So the chassis will transfers that energy to the screen.

So yes, if your want your phone to last, you will need both an aftermarket case since manufacturers ones are shitty, and an aftermarket screen protector. (Yeah manufacturers ones are shitty too)

And the best part is that there's no much we can do about it since it seems that we did accept thoses over-fragile phones right from the beginning.

Motorola Force series seems to be the only "life-proof-straight-out-of-the-box" kind of phone which don't look like a tire.

Where's the third option of "I wish I could use my phone without a case, but it's so fragile I have to use a case?"

I only use cases because i have to not because i want to. Cases protect your phone but at the same time it also hide the phone's design.

If a phones glass... it needs a case 100%

If a phones metal... then its okay without a case

So, you want a thin, shiny phone, with glass back, you cry how the bezels are not tiny enough ... And when you finally buy that thin, shiny phone, with glass back cover which changes the color as you move it in your hand, with bezels so thin that you can barely see it ... then you put it in a case?

Discipline is necessary, not cases. If i can use my note8 for 10 months without dropping it or my older j7 prime for more than a year until i had to upgrade, then anyone can.

This debate is kinda dumb, unless you want your phone to fall and break you'l want a cover.
(Oh and THEY WILL FALL, they always fall)

Even the most durable normal phones get wreked some way or another, by internal component dmg (shock) or external damage (breaks/cracks).

(im excluding the CAT type-like phones for obvious reasons those have a built in super covers)

I dont like cases I've never used them but if I spend $900 on a phone I will definiely use a case as most phones now have glass back (phones with mil std ratings like V30 are excluded) I'll use a case even if its a cheap plastic case that back glass is expensive to repair and front can be protected by cheap glass protector

It depends. I care a lot about my things and i want them to be in perfect condition no matter what. So cases is important. And there are lots of great looking cases out there, not such ugly plastics like these guys talking about.

I haven't used a case on a phone since some time around the Galaxy S2 times. I did buy replacement battery covers in phones that had those, mostly to get something that looked stupid. Especially since the Note phablet sized phones I'm mostly against them because phones are already big as they are. I also think it's stupid that a consumer has to buy accessories to fix deliberate / lazy design flaws by manufacturers. Make them fix protruding, asymmetrically placed cameras instead of us having to work around them. Lastly, if a phone is so fragile it can't last without a case, it's a bad design. Minor wear and tear I don't mind, I don't even care if minor scratches would affect resale value as I'm never aquire devices thinking on how the next owner will enjoy it.

                        Of course!
Even if I will buy a metal phone, I'll still buy a normal case to increase the longevity of my smartphone.

I always buy clear phone cases for my phones so I can still enjoy the looks and know it is protected. It has helped me a couple of times and prevented unnecessary repairs.

I prefer to use case & glass protector to protect my hard earned mobile.

I prefer transparaet soft tpu case and a glass protection combo, theres also ribbed or doted ones which increase grip but for max grip I suggest to buy matte material covered case like a soft tpu plus a paint of matte colouring, those are super gripy even with oily fingers :)

today's smartphone are made up of metal back which makes it slippery moreover the repairing cost is hight ..so better to protect it and keep it usable ...rather than using broken phone and bear heavy expenses....better to be conservative...

My phone is thin and the casing is made of metal. It's difficult to get a good grip on it. I've dropped it a few times already. I bought a rubber casing to make it thicker so I could hold it easier. There's such thing as too thin.

                                    My analogy.
It's like comparing bareback human copulation and condom-ed ones.
Without the case it feels more intimate and true to nature.

                                        Without a doubt.

Protects against the most common which are scratches and then against drops. In some gives even a better grip plus a possibility for accessories without leaving stains on the phone.
