AnonD-762416, 15 Aug 2018The phone will be more compact. The display doesn't necessa... moreIndeed, nothing is perfect.
Screen will be outside when in use, dirt comes from everywhere, it could be on your fingertip that's sliding on the screen. And sand is harder than glass, which will cause microscratches overtime (with plastic it is much worse).

This screen is not glass, as much as they can harden plastic it still wont be a match for sand. Although I do hope otherwise.

Also, self-healing means it has more moving particles of which some is bound to wash away over time... still, it should push the wheel further towards better screens in terms of smoothness.

i fail to make the connection between shattered screens and decaying oleophobic coatings, but “self-regenerating” sounds cool. i hope other manufacturers find a way to follow if the concept actually makes a difference

There are pros and cons with every solution until we invent the ultimate nano material that can be anything and do anything.

Oleaophobic coting is not for protrcting from scratches but for protecting against fingerprints.
It is basicaly a chemical tretment of the glass. How is is self healing without aplaying another coating?
I bet this is a pure marketing thing just to come up with something new to justify the increasing prices of the phones. They don't have many new things to include in the next series and are trying to come with some ingineus marketing to keep the prices high.
One example of this pure marketing is the retina display which basicly is just an IPS LCD but with a trademarketed new name. But iy proved to be succesfull overall making the masses believe that it's a new product.
And speaking about the curved screen - proved to be only for design and not so practical either. Prone to crack more easely and you can not find screen protectors for it. All the screen protectors don't cover all the curved screen and look ugly applyed on it.

Although it's nice to own a foldable phone again. But with such screens, wouldn't it be more prone to scratches? The oleophobic coating isn't a protection. And would screen protectors be flexible and stable enough not to fall with constant folding?
