What's next for smartphone design?

09 September 2018
As manufacturers strive towards smartphones with all screen displays, we look at how manufacturers are differentiating themselves to pull away from the pack.

I can't agree more on what smaller phones wrote : Next for smartphone design = make users able to have the choice between a big device and a smaller one (4.5 or 4.7 inches). 5 inches is definitely NOT a "mini" version of any phone, enough of this haha.

Id like to get a borderless phone with about 4.7" screen and good specs. All of the new phones are too damn big. Especially too tall.

Well written Article, good use of words and the right places. Look forward to more such informative articles!

Bezel less phone without notch and with earphone jack will be cool for me. And 2 rear camera is enough. And finally don't need front button/fingerprint scanner like on past Samsung phones. On screen buttons will be good that will hide when you press lock button.

I don't know what will be next design, but I am sure it won't be something I will like.
What I hope is someone to produce is max 5.2 inch screen device with tiny frame and without notch. But I think the trend will go beyound 8 inches, and notches will become bigger, to underline the exclusivity of the owner - maybe even they will start make apple logo shaped notches in the middle of the screen

I won't ask for any fundamental change, but some mods may improve user experience.
It may not be part of the hardware design, but I want them to come up with a lock-screen virtual button that can silence the phone (pretty much like the camera button on the lock-screen). It can be very useful when you need it, say, right before a meeting. I don't know why they have not done it yet (except Apple that has still kept a physical silence button).
Android should get dedicated screenshot and PDF buttons (virtual).
Improve the stereo speaker quality please.
Stop hybrid dual-SIM, give us dedicated microSD slot in all models.
Last but not the least, officially support (in CPU) 1440p/1080p HEVC 10bit videos.
And, this has nothing to do with the smartphone design, but the design of its case...please, please, please, make a "TRANSPARENT" rugged cover when you design a smartphone; else, making a good looking smartphone doesn't make sense.

The name will be "smartgadget". Without telephony-function because it will be replaced by embedded microchip inside ear. A laser keyboard is real so why not a laser smartphone?

re23071998, 10 Sep 2018go back to 16:9 screen, with metal unibody, and fingerprint... moreThat's my current phone you described.

This is now going out of practical and more into gimmick...
Even old folding phones had issues on place where they were folding (damaged wires/contacts...) and what do you think will happen to a screen that's being fold?
Phones will get more expensive, and less durable, just the way how manufacturers prefer.

                      To anon.
Your right, all device sites are just as boring as the phones they all Bleh Bleh Bleh about, I only remain on this one to post to just to have evidence later on to show how close my predictions come to reality, device makers still havent got the idea properly that the vast majority of users want the biggest possible screen, most don't care what chip, ram etc its got, as long as its enough to work without boring too often at daily tasks, that's good enough, 6 inch phablets all cost more than a 7inch tablet, but then look at the spec for better spec tablet,, same as phablets, but tablet so much easier to use.
Just because some over-rated, under-trained "designer" at flopple has copied a design from braun, again, doesn't mean it's a good design, so why copy it ?
It's all rubbish anyway, it's just a bloody phone, if you had no choice, you would use a device from 12 years ago, it would still do 90% of what a new phone does, just slower, show me one major thing a new phone can do that a 12 year old device can't!!! think very hard, there must have been some advance in 10+ years of spending billions on "research", but speed is the only change you will find..sad isnt it...

i want physics keyboard phone like xperia mini pro

Anonymous, 10 Sep 2018Next is foldable for sure. Not really, the next tech should be mini projector with sufficient beam.

back in my days this phone was a champ:
                            https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_e398-690.php
nice design (thick a little) but comes with RGB rhythm lights on the sides (hidden secret No.1).
and ofc there is something rare in this phone, you can turn it to disco lights mode, with adjustable sound sensitivity, you will have the screen flashing alone on a sound, keypad flashing on different sound, and rgb lights will be flashing also on different sound, imagine that. check the video:
                            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwseCC7MQdA

we need some of the rare old features to be back and improved, not having new dumb ideas like notch.

just go back to how phones used to be in the mid 90's to mid 2000's... back then every single phone had personality. they were all different shapes, sizes, colors, functions, etc. so much more exciting than all phones now...

i want a razr v3, the same exact body and color and texture, but with more memory and with android as its OS.

Ultimately the concept of holding a phone in your hand will become as outdated as turning the dial ring on those old black landline phones.

In not so distant future humans will probably be augmented in a lot of ways, with mobile signals and transmitters embedded inside the bodies allowing to take and recieve calls through voice commands.

If that's too distant a thought then maybe what is closer is phones taking the form of wireless headsets, with the main electronics housed in a wristband or a device that can be attached to a trouser belt. And VR headset like Microsoft HoloLens would allow users to have displays, maybe holographic right in front of their eyes on demand.

Technology will change much rapidly than we think. And someday people would just laugh out and say.....ya we used to hold these rectangular devices against our ear to communicate.

they can do what ever they want to do in the design of phone and what they want to do to the screens but dont use samsung amoled panels its burns and its hurt to see. for how many years no fix at all even using different images different colors to then still you will get the burn.

It is a mix of different UIs, some of which can be tracked back even to windows 98. And duplicate settings(control panel and settings) confuse the users even more.
