As manufacturers strive towards smartphones with all screen displays, we look at how manufacturers are differentiating themselves to pull away from the pack.

the revolution is to remove all hw buttons, technologies allow that. in 2020 it is nonsense having mechanical buttons that can ruin with usage.

and remove all holes in the phone. since iFu*k removed the headphones jack, and all producers blindly copy them, is nonsense to have to connect a cable in a hole in the phone to charge it. when you pull by mistake the cable you drop your phone and can break it... and the usb connection can get loose, and the cable moves etc.. shitty "technology".
wireless charge for all or even better magnetic charge like in my old beloved z3c, that firmly connects magnetically but not so much that if you pull the cable it will drop on the floor, but it will just disconnect in that case, so no need for delicate glass in the back like for wireless charge.

this would be already a big step forward, rather than just copy all sh*t done by Apple, just because it is apple..

notch? are we kidding? give us our beloved FLAT rectangular screen, now! and stop copying all sh*t done by the rotten apple my god!

MY 2 cents.

totally agree dude. he was a mesia a true genius. his thinking and expertise was on another level. i think no sorry i know he would of made such a difference at Apple if he was still here. shame the world lost a genius

      Be nice to see:
Contoured handset like the HTC One S
      Chamfered sides
2 x notification lights on the front running as a small L shape on the corner of the glass to frame. 1 x corner lights as specific colour, if it is a message. The other side of the same corner lights a different colour if its a missed call or whatever. Nokia was infamous for nice coloured lighting
Stylish notch relegated to the rear of the phone to house the camera pinch of style and
      a colour accent

"I'll end with a fun fact. Did you know that some of you have something made from Liquidmetal? The SIM ejector tool that ships with Apple's iPhones is made from such a material."

I've attached that SIM ejector to my car keys. The point is easily bent. If Liquidmetal is that weak, forget it. Just copy what Andy Rubin with the Essential Phone. Titanium and ceramic.

Ash, 09 Sep 2018Maybe a new os instead of design would be what everyone nee... moreWe used to have Windows Phone 8/10 but it didn't last due to small user-base. It was brilliant as far as I'm concerned. It looked fresh & had all the necessary features & was secure too... I think Microsoft shouldn't have given up on it. :(

Predictive memorys, 09 Sep 2018Project Ara? Dead project. However it was a really cool idea, especially with full costumisability. Like...
Your phone has Exynos8895 Module with 4 GB of ram and 64 GB of storage (for example)
"Hmm... The CPU preformance is neat, but I wana try Snapdragon" you think to yourself as you turn off the phone and slap in a Snapdragon 845. "Aww! I know Kim wanna listen with me on the same phone!" Bam! Slap in another headphone jack.
Such a phone will be SO GOOD to own! Too bad it was cancled.

Ash, 09 Sep 2018Maybe a new os instead of design would be what everyone nee... moreFuchsia OS is on it's way as far as I know. And it's Open source just like Android. However I don't know which devices will sport it, or when it'll become mainstream.
And the next conversation between techies will be casual:
Person 1: "Ooh! I really love that ROM, where didcha find it?"
Person 2: "Hm? Oh~ hehe It's not a ROM, my phone runs the Fuchsia OS, it's much better than Android!"
              And so on.

I think that in terms of design, the competition will be focused in colors and at the back of the phone. The form of a phone is vinculed to "the thing we do with", so the future of the design will be 100% vinculated to the things that we will do with it, so maybe the change first are gonna be at the OS. All of us are expecting to have a phone without the bezel, and that will happend in some time, but the thing will change when the usability of a phone changes too. Wait for a surprise, and then we will do more than just watching Facebook and YouTube only at our phones.

Maybe a new os instead of design would be what everyone needs. I feel Android has reached it's limits and iOS is plain inferior. Still would be better to wait and find out if project treble has succeeded or failed. If failed then the best thing to do would be to develop a new better os which is not virtual machine based like Android.

                    Project Ara?

Whackcar, 09 Sep 2018Honestly, the phone designs are getting really boring these... moreNotch at the back cover is the best and unique design! It is practical because the aluminium 7000 notch protect the USB port due to the frame slimmer than last generation.

With the release of flexible displays I want crazy designs like back in 2007-2011 foldable, rollable, phone-tablet hybrid etc

Honestly, the phone designs are getting really boring these days. They're all slabs of glass & metal with funky paintjobs. I think we need new design elements to spice it up. Back in the "dumbphone" era, we had various form-factors & phones used to look different & stylish. People used to have phones that looked different from one another. These days it's no fun anymore. We need a revolution in smartphone design for sure!

Ever since the HTC One m7 I miss them on my Galaxy S7edge. But as they returned on the S9 I'm happy as a kid. Seriously, I watch so much YouTube on my phone that I really missed the stereo speakers.
