One fewer: the OnePlus 6T will not have a headphone jack, Carl Pei confirms

13 September 2018
It's official, folks. OnePlus even unveiled a version of its Bullets V2 headphones with USB-C as the 3.5mm model is going the way of the dodo.

2. It's already a large cable, the tiny adapter doesn't make a difference -- if anything, gives you more room to move arounf.
3. Many things could get damaged, your phone could drop and be a brick. The point is, you get it fixed regardless of what is damaged. If you really want to make the environment argument, it costs more to keep building all those different ports that just build one that is sure to be useful and fit everything.

Anonymous, 15 Sep 2018Really? We still need to repeat the same obvious, common se... more1. Yes you can. Use a splitter.
    2. 3.5 mm ports take additional space.
    3. Same thing can be said about the 3.5 mm port, which is rated for fewer mating cycles than a USB-C port. A 3.5 mm port prevents other internal components from fitting into the device unless you want to make your device larger. The dongle is a compromise between people who want the port and those who don't. It's the best of both worlds.

        1. I can't charge and listen to music at the same time.
        2. USB dongle takes additional space.
        3. USB port could get damaged when used with headphones in your pocket/purse, not to mention more plugging/unplugging will certainly shorten its lifespan. Future? Yea, just like (supposedly) global warming. Doesn't mean it's an improvement. Clearly this solution is inferior. Sure, you could use a high quality dac, but few people will and those people could always do it, the 3.5mm jack doesn't prevent them from using the USB, so CLEARLY it's a huge step back.

Hope Carl Pei (@getpaid) b**ns in he** for his "made-up" survey on 3.5mm jack usage and "flashing a middle finger" to all enthusiasts who use this brand.

Anonymous, 15 Sep 2018Excuse me??? No jack IS A PROBLEM (get this in your head) f... moreOh if only someone invented, as backup, a way to connect 3.5mm jacks to USB-C ports -- perhaps call that an "adapter"... just think about it, because 3.5mm jacks are connected to long wires, if they invented a good adapter "thingy" it wouldn't make any usable difference (just a marginally larger wire) and people could even go as far as using it as a primary (not just backup).

This message was brought to you by the past, when engineers were smart enough to realize that. The future is ready to welcome you, when you are ready.

Anonymous, 15 Sep 2018Excuse me??? No jack IS A PROBLEM (get this in your head) f... moreSeveral companies are already addressing this by letting you continue listening by connecting a USB from your device to your BT headset. But more importantly, you can either use USB/Lightning headphones from the start so you never have to worry about battery, or use the adapter (just keep it connected to your 3.5 mm headphones).

I'd also like to point out that CD-ROM's weren't the replacement to floppy disks. The intended replacement for floppy disks were actually the internet, which people were angry about back then as well. People bought Floppy Disk Drive Dongles. Really. This is history repeating itself.

And as a final word, USB-C isn't compatible with USB-A as a connector. The protocols are compatible, but you still need an adapter. Same with 3.5 mm headphones. Welcome to the future.

I think the smartphone industry abuses us and makes us buy the products we don't really like. Headphone jack is a very useful feature. In few years we end up being in the world with no more Headphone jack phones. Wireless headphones can die, it costs more so replacing it will cost you a lot.
Apple made it and everyone is copying. Cheers to SAMSUNG! for not copying it.

No jack IS A PROBLEM (get this in your head) for many of us Android Truthers / users even when you push for wireless / bluetooth because of logical, convenience and practicality reasons. There should ALWAYS be a backup of technologies in case your bluetooth / wireless battery dies out, you can still rely on wired, period! Except CD ROM because that is superior to floppy. When you take out old tech, you must have a new tech that is much BETTER and support old tech for compatibility reasons. One example is USB 3.0 which supports old USB 2.0 / USB 1.1 / USB 1.0.

I also note that you have completely failed to back up your claim that numerous Android devices have gotten upgrades as major as that of the iPhone 6s -> iPhone 7 without removing the 3.5 mm port.

lmfao, you're telling me I can't compare Android phones to Apple phones when you've asked me to compare them from the start? Wow.

And now you're backtracking (yet again) and changing your statements (yet again) and attempting to discredit what I said because it doesn't suit your notion that removing the 3.5mm headphone jack = good.

I'm done wasting my time on you.

Anonymous, 14 Sep 2018I was zeroing on the waterproofing part of your post. Why d... moreBecause adding waterproofing takes up space in the phone. And Apple managed to add waterproofing to the iPhone 7 without changing the external dimensions, while also adding 245 mAh of battery and a twice as large Taptic Engine.

As I've said before, you can't compare two vastly different manufacturers that have very different technical solutions to see if "keeping a headphone jack is possible". Of course keeping a 3.5 mm port is possible. It's literally a block of plastic with a little metal in it. You can put an entire cruise liner inside of a phone if you just design your phone chassis around it.

The very core of the statement FROM THE VERY START, that you have still failed to grasp, is that you can't keep the exact same volume on a phone and add as much as Apple added in their iPhone 7. They literally added 245 mAh of battery, a twice as large haptic feedback engine and waterproofing. All without changing the dimensions of the device. All thanks to ditching the 3.5 mm port.

I'd also like to point out that Samsung phones are significantly larger and thicker than their competitors. Not really the epitome of 'sleek' devices.

I was really excited about this phone until this news came out. I mean seriously? They are giving the excuse of extra space? Forget about Xiomi, Samsung and others. Just think about Oppo R17. That is exact design OnePlus is going to use as reference. Yet Oppo has included the headphone jack while having an indisplay fingerprint scanner. Even the pro version's gonna have 3700mAh battery and Tripple back cameras. I mean do they have a black hole or something inside their phone?
IMO we should stop buying and let them understand that companies can't work against consumers interest and get away with it.
