[deleted post]Xiaomi devices has Lineage OS support what the hell you talk abut? O3O

"Those days are long gone as all Android phones nowadays are well-optimized, have plenty of customization, and offer most features we need in a device."

      WTF are out talking about?!

When did "smartphone enthusiasts" stop caring about:
      - Adaway (host file editing for ad removal across ALL APPS)
      - Titanuim Backup (Full backups of user and system apps with their data, system app removal/freeze, and too many others to list)
      - Kernel Management (to control ALL hardware behavior)
      - Wakelock blocking (the main reason why my OnePlus 5 is at 76% at 1:55AM after being used all day. Because only wakelocks I CHOOSE are enabled)
      - Correct Tor Routing (Because . . . . DUH!!)
      - TWRP (So that I control MY device, can backup EVERY PARTITION, and, in case of a glitch, failure, etc., I can go back to where I was without re-flashing stock, re-syncing Google, etc. etc. etc.)
      - Custom Kernel (I use ElementalX, and have been for YEARS on ALL of my Android devices. The dev is ALWAYS quick to integrate upstream patches from Google and OEM's, and his kernel manager let's me change ANYTHING)

If you're going to do it, do it RIGHT!! Research on XDA, ask questions (AFTER you've used the 'search' feature), and follow your OEM's instructions for unlocking your bootloader via fastboot. For any of the above you either need an unlocked bootloader or root access, and if you're not using a custom recovery like TWRP to achieve the latter, then have fun with all of that Chinese spyware/adware/malware that Kingo/RootMaster/KingRoot/etc. DEFINITELY installed on your device.

As an "enthusiast", I would think you'd know these things. Any /system modifications are done "systemless-ly" these days. Gone are the days of having to choose between Android/Google Pay and root access. Due to the integration of /data decryption in TWRP, biometric root authorization, and passing SafetyNet without some sketch nonsense that makes you less secure. The enthusiast community is in a VERY different place than it was just a few years ago.

I am on STOCK OxygenOS, rooted with Magisk 17.1, so not only am I able to pass Safety Net, use Google Pay, Netflix, etc., my device is Certified in Play settings.

Having a root manager with fingerprint authentication is TOTAL CONTROL. If someone happened to find a way into my device, which is encrypted (yes, TWRP works with encryption AND Treble), they wouldn't be able to escalate their privileges without giving themselves away, since any root request not approved by my fingerprint would auto-deny after 20 seconds.

And please don't give me that "OnePlus spies on you" nonsense. Before OnePlus removed their sketchy "EngineeringMode" app, I had removed it . . . . because ya know, I CAN REMOVE SYSTEM APPS. Also, I could just switch to another ROM from OOS . . . . ya know, like I SHOULD be able to since I own the device. Fun Fact: OnePlus DOES NOT void your warranty for unlocking your bootloader. If they really were evil, they'd lock you into their software . . . . you know, like Huawei, and soon, Xiaomi ;-)

OxygenOS is, by far, the best version of Android out there for folks like me who want a "lighter" experience with expanded functionality. HOWEVER, it's nice to know that, if I want to, I can switch to any of the DOZENS of continuously developed ROMs that the OP5 dev community is blessed with.

I also need MultiROM on my OnePlus 3T so that I can use Kali NetHunter for security auditing, which would be impossible without an unlocked bootloader.

The one thing I would advise against if you do unlock your bootloader, DO NOT DISABLE DM-VERITY!! I understand that an unencrypted device is a little bit faster, but from a security vulnerability standpoint, it's just not worth the risk, even if you're the safest person out there. In my humble opinion of corse.

What I'm trying to say is, to the writer of this article, don't call yourself an enthusiast and then totally contradict that statement a sentence later. It's just bad writing.

      Rant over.
