        I am confused...

He says it is great to have a small.phone. Then he says it is sad that Sony made another compact.

When since when S9 is small phone? It is same size of Z5.

          Yes...

There is a Honor with almost 18 cm tall.
For me 14.5 is the limit to my use.

While I believe that phones are just a bit too large, Ro just did a horrible job getting the point across. The arguments dont make any sense and are largely not true. Chip's point was much better research but it doesnt take into account one thing.

I have the Galaxy S8. I upgraded from the S6. Technically the phone's size didnt grow much, but it did enough to make it uncomfortable? Why? Not only is the phone taller, but the display grew to the taller end of the device due to the bezel shrinking. The result is I cant use my phone with one hand anymore, and I cant reach the top of the screen. I HAVE TO use a second hand to swipe the navigation bar.

And the S8 is considered to be a compact phone with small bezels (yes Ro), with most devices being much larger.

I would definitely prefer if phones had small bezels and used that advantage to shrink the device size, as opposed to increasing the display size. That didnt happen in any phones, sadly, except the iPhone X. All Android makers used the bezel shrink to make their displays bigger while making the phones not much bigger. We dont have a single device with the good old 5 inch screen with tiny bezels so the device itself could get smaller. That bothers me.

It isn't how many inches you have but how you use them.

Exactly. "Want", not "need", is the right word. Ever since the first iPhone it's "you'll want what we make", not "we'll make what you need". And it's much more efficient (for the manufacturer) then the old Nokia approach of making different phones for people with different needs.

Reason why phones are getting bigger is OS/App UI that doesn't adopt to small screen properly. You could easily live with 4" device as long as UI allows it to be efficient. Screens got bigger to show more content but App scaling is so bad that with big screen you actually get blank spaces due to non proper adaptive scaling. In other words what was a tiny white break area on small screen on big screen it will become huge white break area.

StormyParis, 01 Oct 2018Why is there no "Phones are too small" choice ? That's what... moreexactly.
When Phablets came out the trendy tech media scoffed and said it was a stupid fad...They know nothing!!
Phones have been growing in size for over a decade and Samsung and other manufacturers don't do things without research.
If I hear another douche say "phones are getting too big" I'm going to scream.....

What a dumb survey!!! Obviously you don't know how to do surveys.....unless you wanted a biased survey??
There should be a third option : Phone screens should be larger.
As a user of a Mi Max 3 I want the screen to be a little larger!! Yes!!
And if the phone manufacturers keep building larger phones it means people want them, and they know their global customers more than you do.
Tech commentators like you guys are wrong so often I can't keep track...

Oh, and typing on a phone is more comfortable as your finger has to go less distance while swiping. Or do you like to pretend that it's 2011 all over again and type by pressing separate keys?

It's been a shift in usage, most people have shifted from smartphone usage (single-handed) to tablet usage (both hands). And there are almost no smartphones left on the market.
I mean, XZ2C is awesome in every way, but shrinking it from 65 to 60-62 mm while maintaining the same proportions would make it the most comfortable phone ever.

Phones are fine, really. My first real smartphone was a Samsung Galaxy S II Rocketship. Compared to my Note9, the Note9 is LESS than one inch longer and a QUARTER of an inch wide, while being about 4 mm thinner. But the S2 had a 4.5" screen while my Note9 has a 6.4" screen. The bezels were always the issues and we're finally getting to that bezelless future. In the next five years as we get bendable phones, it's gonna get even better.

Phones nowadays are getting too tall and too long but not wide because of 19.5 : 9 .
I think 18:9 is enough tall and long.

EskeRahn, 01 Oct 2018Diversity is a great thing... Different people, differen... moreThen people would end up complaining that theirs just to many. Like what Samsung did before people constantly pick on them since they offer different variety's under different price points. I remember that quite well from 4 years ago on this site!

my lg g5 has good size and good specs

Why is there no "Phones are too small" choice ? That's what I'd choose ! I still miss my Huawei Mediapad X1: it not only had a huge 7" screen (which some phones pretend to match today), but it also had a 16:10 ratio that made that screen actually bigger (for the same diagonal, squarer screens have a bigger area) and was a much better form factor for most things (reading, maps, games, Office) and not worse than today's idiotic 18+:9 for the rest (video, messaging).

At least, if you're being shy about the "bigger size" vote, maybe have a poll about screen formats. Today's extra narrow messes are good for nothing, any height beyond 16:9 (if that) is useless.

Different people, different usage patterns, different needs => different devices.

There isn't a single device type that fills everybody's needs, so why not offer a variety?
