In more serious note, it's just natural human reaction toward their opinion, natural reflex of believe that they are in the right, that's why "bias" and "keeping blind eye exist". They don't want to be wrong, especially those who really pride on being fan of something (let alone buying phone cost a grand, justification)

I'm torn between either waiting for the S10+ or getting the Note 9 with a Spigen Tough Armour case, but when it comes to screen protectors the choice is huge & confusing, I don't mind whether it's film or tempered glass.
Would you recommend any?

Plus, you do get a whole lot goodies, There's MicroSD Slot, No notch. A pen included, headphone jack, USB OTG piece, USB C to MicroUSB adapter. And if you are not satisfied with the UI you can always switch out to another ROM.
What do you get from an iPhone Xs/Max? ...you know the answer.

You seem to be saying that both are about the same price, I've just checked & they're not.
It's cheaper to buy the 512GB Note 9 than the 64GB XS.
Samsung Galaxy Note 9: 6.4" Screen, 128GB= £849 or 512GB= £1,049, both direct from Samsung with 2 years warranty (covering defects in materials and workmanship), it's cheaper elsewhere, but personally I'd go direct for no hassle.
Apple iPhone XS: 6.5" Screen (- Notch), 64GB= £1,099, 512GB= £1,449.
Apple provides a one-year limited manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for any new Apple-branded product.
Whatever you buy, have a nice day ;)

It's not like apple that needs to make it's software for only one hardware. Where as Android is for every year 1000 or more different models from 100 or more different brand that makes these phones. Take another android phone that dont have these issues. Take Nokia if you still want to pay more for a brand name that has a stock android on them. There is nothing to justify that android has problems too while Apple is not able to make there software to run there own special one hardware and ask these ridicules prices.

(like 620$ for an iPhone XS 64 GB) as a company DO NEED to make some living out of manufacturing a smartphone. but 300% revenue is unacceptable.

If the Iphone that year is bad for some reason or have some sort of problems, you are kind of stuck with it. Or you can buy an older model of Iphone (which in this case is another problem because Apple stopped production of Iphone X).
At least in the Android world you have many good options, cheap, expensive, you name them.
