There are TWO reasons why it's not ok to put a single camera on new flagship phones.

    1. A single regular camera CANNOT do the functions of the other type of cameras. It cannot take wide-angle shots or do optical zoom. No matter how great the image quality is, it will always be missing those features.

    2. Almost every competitor is offering dual or triple camera setup for the same or less price, so it becomes unreasonable for you not to offer the same features for the same or higher price.

There is also the fact that they have used a dual-camera setup for the front cameras... which makes it more ridiculous for it to not have a dual-camera setup for the main cameras.

If these were around £800 over 2yrs, they would be a bargain. Check your figures GSM.

Shanti Dope, 06 Oct 2018The idea was phenomenal back when only Google does it, but ... moreYou need zoom, unfortunately.

This phone will get a weak DxO mark and every Apple fan will belittle it, yet it may well take better pictures.

But because DxO includes Zoom as a score, Apple's telephoto lens means it'll get a score boost.

DxO are out of touch on that front - though they claim they included it because it is was people expect from their phones.

[deleted post]Nah, he's right. Their single camera prowess is fantastic, but dual cameras would add versatility to the mix

Why Google Pixel 3 & 3 XL just want to compare shot with iPhone XS Max? I think it's better to compare it with Huawei P20 Pro. I just want to see that 1 camera can beat the 3 camera 😁😁😁

I'll be honest, the pixel devices are still Nexus devices, not because of the price but because they still cut corners on actual hardware, and this time it seems it was designed by 1000 monkeys in a room with cad software. Disappointed and skipping, pixel 2xl with 6gb ram and better cameras and screen would be perfect. Ah well

I love Pixel cameras we are talking about possible 120 vs 105 LOL!! But the main problem with Pixel are other issues like display, battery swelling (in my Nexus 6P), poor connectivity (During upgrades LTE goes for a toss), nil support.... otherwise a great device

Nokia does it much better, and in that case, Sony is more or less on par with them in terms of updates and support.

Nick Nagataka, 06 Oct 2018Almost all major flagship smartphones with Snapdragon 845 e... moreTechnically, the XZ2 and XZ3 devices are all capable of 1080p@240fps slow motion recording as well (it's just the same exact SoC, and the AUBE Fusion ISP is even more powerful than the typical ISP from other phones), only that the option isn't there. But there are some work-arounds, like apps that actually allow the feature to do it.
Idk why Sony didn't actually give more options, but it's definitely possible to do it.

Edit: I didn't see the 4K@60fps thing, but Sony didn't allow this thing because I heard that stabilization is horrible at this resolution, and it's quite true since the Note 9's 4K@60fps videos are shaky even with OIS. EIS doesn't work at this resolution, and Sony instead has 4K HDR, which I find more fun since it makes good use of the beautiful HDR display, and besides, 60fps is still available at 1080p. Sony may have this feature once EIS can be implemented nicely at this resolution.

Funny enough, Xperia XA1 of last year got faster updates than some Android One devices like Xiaomi Mi A1.

Shanti Dope, 06 Oct 2018Yes, a great camera. But it's not the only flagship this ye... moreAlmost all major flagship smartphones with Snapdragon 845 except XZ2/XZ3 are capable of recording slow motion in FHD at 240fps and 4K video at 60fps, and I think those two are a lot more practical than just having super slowmo. And that slow mo on Sony phones doesn't even have an option for automatic motion detection, so it's not that great usability wise compared to the similar feature on Galaxy Note 9, for example. Though I agree with you on the rest of the "camera alone is not convincing enough" argument, Google needs to deliver the actual quality hardware and good software experience this time around. Pixel 2 XL for instance was a complete mess of a phone. Trash display, bug-infested software, and now bizarre UI slowdown issues etc... They need to sort out their quality control issues before introducing any additional features to their products.

Kingslayer, 06 Oct 2018Google's algorithm has always been more contrast-y. It defi... moreThey should've started having dual rear cameras by now, even for just one device. But here's to hope that they would listen and actually try better next year.
For now, they must stop making fun of Apple or Samsung, or basically any other brands, when they're going to just follow them a year later. It's disgusting that they've criticized the iPhone 7/7+ for having no 3.5mm jack, but then did the same thing for the Pixel 2/2XL a year later.

Props to Jon Prosser for leaking it. I find his thumbnails more hilarious than Unbox Therapy's redundant facepalms. I'm really not wowed by the Pixel 3. With the V40 spearheading triple-lens on the rear and dual-lens at the front, it just makes the others feel dated.

The V40's quality across all five cameras is inconsistent though. But eventually, I would love to have a zoom and wide-angle on it. That becomes more useful in situations than having a single shooter. Better to have them than not at all.

I'm checking through Slickdeals and I see a $300 iPhone 7 at Costco (YMMV). That should be the next budget iPhone to succeed over the SE. I love that size but I don't love iOS. Expect $200 by Black Friday next month. I wish the smaller Pixel 3 was that size and had a metal back.

They surely cranked up the exposure on the iPhone XS Max camera! The real low light shot of iPhone XS Max is here: https://www.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_xs_max-review-1829p6.php

                                      Check the camera section!

That is just a strategy of them, so many buyers will be attracted to the pixel.
