The whole point of using the "x" standard is to simplify things for the customer. I can assure you that the average customer doesn't understand, nor cares to understand the algorithm of these techs.

Unnecessary discussion, it’s up the manufacturers what kind of marketing they want to communicate to the outside and what specs they announce.......

"Why underestimate the consumer when you can instead educate them?"
1. It's cheaper
2. Everybody else is doing it
3. If you think your consumer is dumb, why will you make an effort educating them? if they are not dumb, why will you need to educate them?
In my case, I'm satisfied if the manufacturer simply states in small print the 35mm focals equivalents, ex: 24/56/80

1. They are not zoom lenses. They are fixed focal length lenses. You can't zoom with any of them. It's like saying that, with a DSLR, you have a fixed 15, 30, 50 and 80 mm lenses, and then you claim that you have a 15-80 zoom lens. You don't.
2. The "2x" or "3x" designation is not the designation of the focal length range, but the zoom range. 3x zoom can be both 12-36 mm and 100-300 mm.
I don't see where's the confusion.
