Why Huawei's NM cards mean you don't get to expand the Mate 20 storage

17 October 2018
Let's look at the possibilities of NM cards becoming a trend and why that won't happen anytime soon.

Can you have those alternative storages without adding bulk and adding more things to remember to always bring, drop or misplace? Ever since I got a 200GB micro sd card on my phone, I never bring any external hard drives and thumb drives anymore. And my laptop? I bring it once in a blue moon when I have to type anything longer than 1 page while I'm on the go.

USB HOSTING, the best reason going now for rooting a phone best if all worlds is a phone with a decent amount of internal storage, say 64gb + sd card capability + USB hosting for very fast, very cheap, easy swapable, easy transported data storage.
The last non-standard storage i bought into was Sony magic memory sticks, because they were the only way to expand storage on Sony-Ericsson p800910i series of early smartphones, memory sticks were hard to get and pricey, sd cards have become the huge success they are for the exact opposite, cheap, easy to get, used in many types of devices etc etc.
Why start back down a road we left years ago, nm cards bring nothing new and are a retro-grade step down in performance, basically a bloody stupid idea, how many more Huawei phone do you think they will release with nm capability ? bet you it's very few..

Anonymous, 18 Oct 2018Wow, how naive of you. Do you ever record 4k videos? Do you... moreI admit, you know something but you blow it: you asked me about if I record 4K videos then say that uploading files to and from cloud takes time and battery drainage. But isn't 4K a way bigger battery killer than cloud uploading? Not to mention that heats up the phone like a cooking pan...Check first before writing something foolish. And where I live data is extremely cheap and I afford uploading to-from the cloud. Also, 4K HD Hollywood movies....for real? Are you that addicted or was that just a bad example? Yea, 4K looks amazing..but rarely human eye can detect it....it's all in your brain..and sometimes too much 4K can make you real dizzy and give you headaches as it puts a lot of pressure on your eye strain (I'm sure you are quite aware of this). There are tons of materials on this subject ergo I won't debate on them.

Or and portable SSD - a bit more expensive but also impressive = both are portable devices. Besides, you can always accommodate your own private cloud...so no spying

Which only means you are not able to make use of storage space and online services effectively.

Upgrade your thinking/life and stop making things hard for yourself.

Do you know that high quality 4K 60fps video recording consumes 2GB/minute of high-quality footage? And that they look absolutely marvelous when wirelessly screen shared ANYWHERE there's a big screen 4K tv, that you'd regret not having your other 4K videos with you, and you'd regret why you didn't record other memorable events in 4K instead just because your phone lacks storage space? Do you have a 60GB offline encyclopedia you can access anytime, anywhere, data or no data, wifi or no wifi that is vastly useful and provides you with a wealth of life saving knowledge and information? Do you have high quality FLAC music collection ripped from your rare collector's CDs for the highest quality music listening and enjoyment anywhere you go that Spotify or Google music can never give you? Do you frequently capture RAW photos using your smartphone for the best and highest photo quality possible during special occasions? Do you own high quality, 4K or full HD Hollywood movie collections or download 4k movies for offline viewing? Those things will require you to have at least 256GB storage! Why pay for higher internal storage options when you can have cheap micro sd cards usable through phones with micro sd card storage expansion? Why waste so much money on high internal storage options that you can't even transfer to another phone should you buy a new one or when your phone dies?

Just because you only use your phone for uploading Facebook selfies and watching YouTube videos doesn't mean all other people do the same and don't need micro sd storage. Just because you like to waste data and money paying for cloud fees, and waste time and battery power uploading and downloading huge files from the cloud exposing your private data to seasoned international hackers in the process doesn't mean other people like to do the same. For your info, I have a 200GB micro sd card in my phone and it's 70% full with those files I mentioned. And yes, I back them up to my PC hard drives and external hard drives, but I retain many of them in my micro sd card simply because micro sd storage is cheap, and it's such a convenience and such a liberating experience to have them playable and accesible, anytime, anywhere, network or no network, wifi or no wifi everytime I need them! Now you know!

Not buying a car without a caravan hook either, right? Because it would not allow you to keep all your stuff with you at all times. haha

It's inevitable. Huawei is going the Apple route of using proprietary formats.

But, I have on my 32Gb SD card all my kits (windows, android, Linux), books, audio books, tutorials, documents, music, videos.
This way I NEVER use a spying cloud service, I NEVER need an internet connection and if my phone breaks into a million pieces, I just pop out the SD card and insert it into the new phone. Not to mention I have everything right there, on the spot. Yes, I have a PC backup in case I loose my phone, so I'm not worried.
You would never believe how handy it is when the internet is not working or there's no electricity ( it's rare, but it happens to all of us once in a while).
And even though the internal memory is better than my Class 10 Extreme SanDisk SD, I only install apps on the internal memory.
The difference is of barely 1-2 seconds so I don't mind.
It's not like I'm using an atomic clock or something and every millisecond counts.
If you people don't need or use it, it doesn't mean everybody is like you. it's called diversity.
Like I said in a previous post, I'd NEVER pay or even use as a gift a phone without the SD card, no matter what brand it may be. Their marketing bs doesn't affect my needs.
I'm a power user, not a fb sheep where the only thing that matters is how good my silly selfies are.

This is the first gen of the nm so of course it will be more expensive and slower but the second gen nm could be faster and offer more storage. I hope the SD association adopts nm quickly. It would also be nice to see phones use ufs storage cards as well.

A good phone made undesirable by proprietary external storage expansion. Nobody should buy it even if only to send a signal to Huawei proprietary external storage is unacceptable.

Anonymous, 18 Oct 2018Well Apple lighning is a standard... and only one manufactu... moreIt seems you don't understand the difference between standards and proprietary protocol design which may be a standard for a single manufacturer. Lightning connector is a proprietary connector only for Apple devices, just like the 30 pin connector before it. (FYI - Word is that Apple is looking to change it's proprietary connector again.)

To call what Huawei is doing with their memory card or any of Apple's connectors a "standard" in the same realm as any of the USB or SD standards is improper application of the term.

Until such time as the international standards body comes to terms with Huawei so that any manufacturer can produce the internal components to connect to a NM Card, it is proprietary to Huawei.

                                Its also a possibility.
But as long as you cant run any app from a memory card anything below 64GB is a big problem.
Lets say for adult people not so excited for having zillions apps 32GB should be enough.
But in almost 2019 i would reccomend 64GB as a bare minimum internal memory for a phone.
But the fact is phone memory is very expensive.
Difference between 256 and 512 is huge in many cases new huawei Porsche design is a good example. Note 9 or apple XS max as well.
But fun fact is between 64 and 256 GB at pocophone is only 50 euros.

Base storage of Mate 20/20pro is 128GB. That is sufficient for most of the users. Lot of people using 32GB/64GB fruit mobile without any chance of expanding memory & still very happy.
