Why Huawei's NM cards mean you don't get to expand the Mate 20 storage

17 October 2018
Let's look at the possibilities of NM cards becoming a trend and why that won't happen anytime soon.

this nano this and that speculations is quite irrelevant for me. i have lived with 128gb flaghips without a need for expansion anyways. good for me.

Anonymous, 17 Oct 2018LIES !!!! Dont believe in those MicroSD speeds. .. I hav... moreThat's an EVO card. Read the brandings on your card. 300MB/s is for UHS-III Cards. Phones can't read UHS-III. You have a UHS-I U3 card. SD cards do get up to 300MB/s

Mate 10 Pro, P20 & P20 Pro all didn't have expandable storage at all... So the way i see it, this new memory card standard is better than not having one at all. A typical Micro-SD slot would've definitely been better, but alas, Huawei made a marketing decision and released a proprietary card instead.

Apple could've done the same, but instead they massively overcharge for higher storage options...

Unless you are storing thousands of RAW photos or hundreds of cinema movies on your phone. More than 128GB of storage is for niche people. Anyway today streaming movies as well as music is very popular and people upload their pictures to Google photos, so you basically oly storage you need is for apps. If you are really heavy gamer 20GB is till enough.

Don't worry Chinese manufacturers will step in to fill the gap. You will be able to easily buy them online.

I addition Huawei offers adapters NM card to Micro SD. So being against new modern standard like NM card would be like sticking to old format of full size SIM card or Micro SIM. Nonsense in world where we are squeezing so much into so small space like phone body.

Wrong marketing strategy from Huawei. If now you want to get 256 or 512 GB storage you should buy the Porsche design which costs a fortune! Why restricting people and not offering the same storage 128/256/512 GB for all models?

I have a Samsung Note8 256GB and I was thinking to change over to Huawei. With this strategy sorry Huawei.

In EU Huawei is giving away 128GB NM card and wireless charger for free with Mate 20 PRO pre-orders, so any availability speculations like in this article are pointless. I personally see getting free wireless charger and memory card as very convenient.

mSD seems tiny enough, if you ask me. idk, i'm just not buying the space constraint reasoning for dropping either the mSD slot or 3.5mm jack. i'm also not buying the "it's too slow" complaint for mSD expansion. it's not good for random r/w, afaik, but perfectly fine for typical media storage

If existing smartphones come with a software upgrade that you can put NM cards in SIM Cards and work as intended, I think it'll see a bright future as we found out the SIM slot contacts are capable of that.

For now, give it two years of trial. I think we said the same thing to SSDs that they're too expensive, right? 7 years later, we're only a few dimes away to match the price to capacity ratio for the HDD drives.

Give NM a chance and make sure they coexist. My Nintendo still needs that MicroSD.

Sad that it's too small to be slotted inside a MicroSD shaped adapter.

Reminds me of the time I had a Sony Ericsson. Though it was a superb phone I had to sell it because of the dumb proprietary memory card and the proprietary charger.

Dont believe in those MicroSD speeds.
                                        ..
                                        I have
Samsung EVO Plus 128 GB MicroSd card.
                                        And it reaches
39 MB write and 59 MB reading speeds in Samsung Note 8,
and even lower ones on my Samsung notebook.
                                        Tested with various benchmarks.
                                        ..
                                        BUT it was advertised
                                        100 MB/s read speed and
up to 95 MB/s write speed...
                                        ..
                                        Still nowhere around.
(If it was 10 %lower than advertised i would understand but it is more than 50% at maximum)
P.S: It is bought from Samsung own website and it is original.
