Although Samsung has become the leading smartphone brand today, it wasn't always the case. Back in the feature phone era, the market was wholly dominated by Nokia & Motorola (& Sony Ericsson to a lesser extent). Samsung was overlooked by most and served as a cheap alternative. Samsung didn't really start progressing until they jumped on the Android bandwagon.
Android has changed the fate of many. Those who didn't accept it (e.g. Nokia) were killed in the process, and had to rebirth & accept it in the end. Those who made the early switch, are reaping the benefits.
