Whackcar, 03 Nov 2018Open your eyes and take a good look at the link you've prov... moreSamsung were first to opt for 12 MP large pixel pitch sensors combined with a wide aperture lens specifically so as to reduce noise and so improve low-light performance. They did this in the S7 - previously the S6 had a 16 Mp sensor with a smaller pixel pitch. Also on the S7 they introduced dual phase contrast detector pixels (PDAF) across the whole sensor in to deliver very fast autofocus. All these are developments Apple copied - apart from not going to 16 Mp then backtracking - instead they went from 12 MP small photosite to 12 MP larger photosite and wider aperture, but still after Samsung did. One thing Apple didn't copy from Samsung was dual lens cameras - they copied that from LG.

Apple are the king and leader in computational photography - where they leverage software to overcome camera hardware limitations so they can use cheaper components to achieve results comparable to more expensive camera modules used by competitors. They are now leveraging the neural network processor incorporated in the bionic series processors to achieve realtime optimized image compression for video, which is one reason why the iPhone X is particularly good at video.

When I completely stopped using Apple Products (macbooks, iPads and iPhones), I realised that Apple has good quality control but they unneccessarily over-priced and overhyped products. And their improvements are very minor over each generation (it took them Almost an ENTIRE DECADE to reach QuadHD resolution). Only Recently have they improved the quality of their video sound recording Mics from mono to stereo).

As readers and members of these forums, it is our duty to push smartphone tech and user experience to the maximum. And call out people who don't give us our money's worth (like the recent Pixel 3 which is a own trick poney: It takes arguably the best pics around).

For me the Camera is comes above and beyond everything else on a smartphone.

If smartphone could shoot usable Low Light upto ISO6400 (preferably in 14bit RAW) and 10bit video (or 12-bit in an 8bit wrapper like Cineform), I probably would even use film and photographic cameras sparingly. And I am sure professionals would easily pay $1.5-2k for such a photographic and videographic monster.

Please do your research better and don't act like an iPhone fanboy. It's unfair to both you and Apple. Lots of companies have done some great research let's give credit where it's due.
