Which is were most people drive (Office, Photoshop, Adobe reader, Netflix, Spotify, emails, Facebook, Skype - the ipad does the things most people do faster and better than 92% of the devices out there). But you can't take it offroad and you can't park on a pavement!

patoka, 06 Nov 2018Yeah, that's all great and everything - the power of the a1... moreThe iPad is not designed to replace a workhorse laptop. It's a personal device, not a work/business station.

And to your car comparison - yes, it's a Bugatti Chiron (or any other supercar) and for that matter you can't expect it to have a big trunk, fit 5 people, carry your weekly groceries, go over anything else than proper roads.
For those things you need a minivan, or in terms on digital tech, a Mac/Windows/Linux workhorse laptop.
And if you want to carry 40 people along with their luggage, or just a lot of materials and items, you use a bus or a truck - or in digital tech terms, you use a desktop workstation.

Anonymous, 06 Nov 2018online search for: tom's guide New iPad Pro Benchmarked:... moreYeah, that's all great and everything - the power of the a12x is undeniable but the point here is that a macos or windows laptop can do a lot more for the same or less amount of money. Yeah, they'll do things slower, but they can do a ton more.

Apple says that the new ipad can match an xbox s, but there are no games to showcase this performance. Apple compares it to a laptop and says that it's faster than 92% of the laptops, yet ios hardly has the productivity apps required to replace a macbook or a windows laptop used for work.

It's like having a Bugatti Chiron but only being allowed to drive it in a small suburb. Yeah, you'll look cool in it, yeah, it will be a joy to drive even at 40 miles per hour, but you are not able to use its real power. That's what Appe is doing right now - they've released a fancy-looking ipad with a top-of-the-line SoC, but when you limit that extra potential performance due to the lack of content to showcase it, you're just left with an expensive fancy-looking ipad which does pretty much the same as the previous ipads.

I for one, have sold my Macbook Pro 15" and replaced it with the iPad Pro 12.9" 2017, as I realised it's more convenient to use than a full fledged workhorse laptop.

And for work, I have a Macbook which is company property. I don't need to own such a device for personal use. If I were to run a business or have my entire work done from home, then I would have kept the Macbook. But now I only use my iPad and I don't miss anything on it.

Performance aswell, plus a good battery, and it is portable, meaning - very convenient to use and carry. It's far from major game changer but it sure does beat most laptops on more than just one area.

But that's the issue - most people who would buy an ipad already have perfectly working ipads.

It doesn't matter if the new ipads are as powerful as consoles or most laptops if there are no professional grade apps and AAA games for them. I can play perfectly fine PUBG and Angry Birds on my ipad, hell, people can play =perfectly fine any ios game on the cheap standard 9.7 ipad. Apple needs to connect to software and game devs and really bring a change to the appstore because having the option to stick the apple pencil magnetically to the ipad is not enough of an incentive to get people to buy a $1000+ ipad.

patoka, 06 Nov 2018No, I'm not - what are you talking about? If the new ipad d... moreHave you seen Apple's iPad ads? They don't market them as office and business products.

Instead, they said they're faster than 92% of laptops sold. Which is true, considering that 80% of laptop sales are in the $300-$700 range. That's what people buy for personal use.

And the iPad pro is a replacement for those types of laptops, for people who don't expect to be doing work/business stuff on them. Maybe some lightweight things, but nothing serious.

However, since iPads have a touchscreen and they support pencils, they prove to be very nice tools for artists and people who like to draw stuff up. So they could be considered work devices, but just for creatives. (graphics, drawing, photo editing, etc.)

Plus they can work without keyboards or any other accessories, so they are lightweight and easy-to-hold-and-carry devices. Ever used a laptop in a car/bus/train/airplane? I can tell you it's not the nicest experience when you don't have a table. Whereas an iPad provides you with all the goods. (premium screen, very hig resolution, wide color gamut, top-level performance, portability, slim and lightweight, quality materials, data security, updates, graphics performance, battery life)

You can carry it and use it around the house, your back garden, at a picnic, in the bathroom, in the attic, in your garage, use it while walking, etc. And it's incredibly thin and light.

When you need some heavy work done, you just go to a table or a desk and use your workstation-laptop or your desktop. (which are most likely dedicated to work)

Anonymous, 06 Nov 2018What you are talking about is a workhorse laptop, a portabl... moreNo, I'm not - what are you talking about? If the new ipad doesn't replace powerful workstation laptops and doesn't replace gaming laptops how many people are going to buy it? That's exactly what all the reviewers are also saying.

The people who don't need powerful workstations or don't play graphic-intensive games are the people using $300-400 notebooks for web browsing, watching movies, doing light work and creating non-professional content. They won't pay $1000-1500 more just to be able to do the same thing on an ipad. That's the whole issue behind the entire apple advertising campaign - the new ipad might be faster than 92% of the laptops but is also a lot more expensive than those laptops.

And Apple is kinda fighting against itself because the "creative people" they have always targeted with their products will still choose a macbook pro over the new ipad because it costs pretty much the same ad macos is a lot more versatile than ios.

The ios game library has less than 1% of what is out there for windows, for instance.
