Weekly poll: are pop-ups better than sliders?

18 November 2018
Both motorized pop-ups and manual sliders offer a way to circumvent the notch. But which design is better?

I also rate 16:9 screen very high and if there was such option amongst flagships with small bezels i would instantly favor it. Yes indeed videos are wasted in 18:9 screens and ultrawide diagonals are of the same inch, actually have a smaller screen.
Thats why gsmarena now calculates the total surface area in cm2.
The 6T has 100cm2, definitly bigger than the 1+ 5
The screen to body ratio is alsi much improved, no contest really, the 5 had almost 1cm upper and lower chins.
The 6T is a craftmanship miracle considering it has better screen to body ratio than mi mix 3
The edge to edge screens also have an unfair advantage over the rest, with claimed 4-5% improved bezels due to the fact that in measurements, practically the edges have zero bezels, however convex screens lose some display surface during certain angles.
I believe manufacturers are unable to make 16:9 screens with small bezels, because unlike Apple, they are unable to cut the lower chin. Also, they can only got that far, because they have now realised that if they grow beyond 7.5cms wide, they cant be used with one hand and they can only grow taller.

If you watch a video (or take a video, or a photo, or play most Apps) you need a 16:9 aspect ratio....
....and the video you watch on the OnePlus 5 is the SAME size as on the 5t. However, the OnePlus 5 is a physically SMALLER device. That means the OnePlus 5 has LESS BEZELS than the 5t. And if you compare the 5t to the 6 to the 6t, you will realise the devices have progressively gotten LARGER but the display is SAME. Basically it means the Screen to Body (StB) Ratio of the 1+5 is higher, and the 6t's StB is actually lower.

So if you think the bezels of the OnePlus 5 are horrible for 2018, then the bezels of the OnePlus 6t should be unacceptable!!!

If you don't trust me, that's fine, do the maths yourself and you will know the truth.

I voted for manual sliders, because bar phones have notches on the picture. If there was Meizu 16, I would've choose it. I don't mind sliders like Mi Mix 3, but such devices will be expensive always.

Nubia X was the best idea for me. Just needed a headphone jack and micro SD support

Joe Dickson, 19 Nov 2018I think the Meizu 16th does it right.Yes.. I hope Meizu makes a little more expensive varian which have NFC and a little bit thicker to make the battery capacity larger.. Meizu 16th has quite small battery because of its thickness is just 7.3mm.. I dont need curve display on its edge because if it is broken then the replacement part is very expensive.. Small forehead and chin for me is enough for now.. Until we can see the front camera under display is ready..

              🙄 Nubia X

                  manual sliders will win

as for me: I dont need any front cam, since most phones are reflective on the back this would be enough to take a selfie that usually are crappy no matter the lenses, flash or anything. The Nubia X is my favorite right now, but actually, I dont want another screen if its not eink...Im undecided and might get the mix 3 just because the mix 2 is perfect for me. Most likely I will wait for mix4 or magic 3 for a full bezelless screen and not chin+slider+top bezel.

Joe Dickson, 19 Nov 2018I think the Meizu 16th does it right.Very close, but their top bezel isn't as thin as the side ones, so not good enough this time for my sake.

Where is the correct answer?- notchless bar phone is the way, the idea of bezelless phone is misguided, and all those sacrifices to usability are a total waste.

People saying thick bezels are the worst thing in smartphone history are worse than people saying you'll be better off as a vegan.

Having said that, notice that phones with an edge-to-edge display are less durable in terms of drop protection than phones with more pronounced bezels. Look at LGs and Samsungs - The G6 and G7 have MIL-STD 810G rating, whereas Samsung's Infinity Display breaks when you drop it from just pocket height.

What's worse is its bezels, it's completely unacceptable for late 2018
Speaking about bezels, time to return on topic, yes, we value reliable phones and mechanisms, retractable parts are a mortal danger soon or later, as i would like to see a flagship without selfie cam, or at least a hidden one, i was delighted with the idea and then reality hit the floor, slider mechanism takes away from battery capacity and completely ruins the phone, as bateery is the second most important feature after display. Sliders are very heavy and the bane of decent battery capacity.
In the top of that, i mostly hate when such a thing is unpractical, like in the mi mix3 case, the phone needs to be near the plug constantly, because of the slider mechanism that supposedly would give it a better body to screen ratio, yet somehow it ranks lower that a conventional design, like the 1+ 6T, which has more screen in roughly the same dimensions, without sacrifing the battery, price and weight
The only decent slider out there is honor magic 2, yet it has restricted availability...

The only advantages the OnePlus 6t has is the Faster (+10%) and More Efficient (-10%) processor, larger battery capacity (+10%), a moderately better Main Camera, and slightly better front-camera.

Besides that; the mono-speakers are the same/quite, the Secondary Cameras are just as useless, the LED's are same dimness, both lack waterproofing, and both have a very old/slow USB 2.0 ports.
What they both do have are excellent SAMOLED displays, superb StockishOS, great community support, and some third-party accessories.

However, the advantages that the OnePlus 5 has is a... Headphone jack, Smaller width, Smaller length, Thinner Profile, Lighter Weight, a Non-slippery rear construction, and a device that's more durable against drops. On top of all this, the OnePlus 5 launched 18 months earlier and at US$100 cheaper (even cheaper now).
