02 December 2018
Portable consoles have a long, profitable history and phone makers have been trying to crack into that market for over a decade.

I know smartphones are popular for silly games, but they arent gaming devices comparable to consoles, even handhelds. Android and iOS are mostly filled with simple, time killer games with inconvenient controls and lack any immersive stories. I dont consider smartphone gaming to be true gaming. Adding controls to a smartphone doesnt make it a proper gaming device either.

I sure wish I could combine handheld gaming with a phone. But it seems to be a distant concept, as it would require a whole, proper gaming platform with a new game ecosystem.

I would love Sony Ericsson to come back with a modern phone. Imagine with a joystick (a la 3DS), shoulder buttons, PSP/Vita emulator, Vanilla Android with gaming apps to help with the settings, over 5,500 mAH battery, cooling system, 6" 1080p/2K display, and full LTE coverage across the board for ease. That would be incredible.

Peter-B, 02 Dec 2018Okay, I may have been a little too dismissive of the PSP. S... moreThe problem with this article is that it only accounts sales... and while this is the most logical measurement of success, I think the proper fight should take into consideration professional reviews, consumer ratings, fan loyalty, etc...

Nintendo will always be Nintendo, and they always monetize on nostalgia... (don't get me wrong, I am a dad that still owns and PLAY an original WII weekly with my 7y/o kid) and I game him an old Xperia device with emulators so he can play NES, SNES and N64 games which he loves better than modern phone games....

But my point is that this type of fight should take more factors than simply sales to actually represent how wonderful those portable gaming devices are/were.

I sold my Henkaku Ps Vita and re-purchase the Sony Xperia Play. That should tell you how good the Play still is compared to some of these handheld in it's flexibility. Since the emulator quality improves over time, the games are still very playable on the Play. If you adjust the settings correct for ePSXe on the Play, you can get up to 90-100fps for PSX games on the Play.

Neither the X Play or the Vita could thrive because the 3DS line obliterated them. The single most successful 3D product.

gaming phones are insanely pricey with little triple A libraries. unlike phones, portable console doesn't need lte connection and doesn't pay heavy taxes from big wireless corporate, which cut costs heavily. portable console are also cheaper due to sold at loss and profit will come after game sales.
