Unfortunately, I'm quite knowledgeable here and I don't believe you are accurate in your assessment. Things look more likely in the scenario that I have described.

The performance of the Snapdragon 8cx will probably be rather similar to the Core i5-8250U (or that is what we are being encouraged to think) but it will have a much lower power draw. 7W TDP for the Snapdragon SoC vs 15W TDP for the Core i5-8250U. So, you are wrong. The comparison doesn't show the two chips to be roughly equal but rather the 8cx is vastly superior in energy efficiency terms.

ZolaIII, 10 Dec 2018Thanks for showing us that you don't know anything about in... moreI'm a scientific engineer by trade, this stuff is just my hobby.
I personally have a diesel truck and a petrol sedan, and I do maintenance on both vehicles.
Though I must admit that I also take public transportation.

I think that whole paragraph went over your head. For many years, we had increasing regulations on petrol-powered gas, where diesel trucks got an exemption. This caused companies to invest R&D into their engine systems, and resorted in higher power, lower fuel consumption, lower emissions, and higher responsiveness from the power plant. It wasn't simply a "make engine better", no it is a SYSTEM, and it was improved gradually over time using different technological aspects. However, what I said was that, these technological improvements didn't become a car-only feature. No they eventually trickled up to workhorses/trucks. And now, since these trucks no longer get the emission exemptions of years past, they get as much (actually more) attention.

So your narrative about the latest Snapdragon 855/8CX getting specialised hardware-acceleration (ie a separate/specialised processor) beating the likes of Intel/AMD is fundamentally flawed. Because in the technological sector, when one company has that much of an advantage over another, it forces the latter to adapt and catch up. Or at the latest it causes them to sign an agreement to license the technology (just like in the automotive industry/analogy).

Besides, there is ZERO mention about the Snapdragon 855/8CX transcoding 8K/60Hz videos at 10-bit anywhere. I have no idea where you brought this information from. And those Nvidia GPU's are much much more powerful than you believe they are, you seriously underestimated them. Although I must break it down, transcoding isn't as merely as demanding as you make it out to be. In fact, Intel's own puny iGPU's (Iris/UHD) can do it at a "whopping" 4K/60Hz videos at 10-bits even using hardware acceleration... you know the chips that are in DIRECT competition to these ARMbooks. Analogue of diesel motor's to X86 is wrong from the bigging because X86 is much less efficient on the other hand analogue to you with 90's diesel somehow stands.

Why shouldn't they move to ARM when it's so much more efficient than x86 seems to have any chance of being? As well as closing in heavily with regards to power? x86 have stagnated, quite severly. At least Intel has. AMD was never really the efficient one, just bang per buck, but seems like they might get ahead these days and keep evolving x86, but the steps ARM takes yearly are much bigger.

Interestingly, a lot of laptop users like me doens't necessarily requires the higher performance than mobile phone, so I view x2 performance might be good enough to me and my wife as well. We have two laptops and the reason we're mostly using them is they have larger screen than mobile phones.

Petrol automobiles were showing good performance metrics because of innovations supplementing the engine/system. However, what transpired simply is that diesel trucks then picked up these too (eg Turbo-diesel), and maintained their lead.

I feel this analogy/history fits, because x86 systems feel like trucks...powerful, dependable, used for work tasks. Whereas ARM is suitable for the regular joe.

You mustn't be too hasty to dismiss the likes of IPC and top performance. AMD did this mistake with the Bulldozer architecture, and it cost them 10-years of insignificance (plus almost declaring bankruptcy a few times).

The future of computing & personal computing lies in special purposes & general purpose accelerators much more than general purpose CPU core's and in that aspect S8CX is light years ahead traditional X86 systems so for instance you can capture or transcode an 8K HEVC 10 P60 video in real time with only a fraction of power on S8CX while while you need a serious workstation with cuple Xeons and cuple Nv flag GPU's to do the same job on X86 side & it's still very buggy. That is just one example, truth is that S8CX is a highly advanced SoC with lot of aspects (DSP, IPS, cellular modem, Adreno GPU, new fast WiFi...) that are far ahead from traditional laptop/notebook component integration. Windows ain't ready but Linux certainly is.
