Anonymous, 13 Dec 2018Sony Mobile do use better sensor, it's just either they don... moreThat's why they should step up their camera game for their alpha range already.
Let their smartphone sensors happily pass the 1/2" sensor size territory, and make the alpha sensors also increase in size for better quality.
As for image processing, they need to do some more research about how to improve the quality drastically.
The current ones on their XZ3 is the greatest IF it was used in 2016, but multi-frame image stacking has already proven its effectivity, and Sony needs to sort it out.

Also, since it appears to be combining total 16 pixels into one, I think the resultant image would be a little above 2 MP (38 MP/ 16 P = 2.xx MP)
I can't see any other arrangement possible.
Although, these white pixels might drastically reduce color noise, the one that is the worst form of image noise.

I'm reading some comments here.
See, no doubt Sony is among the best sensor makers out there... There's no doubt. Make a list of top 5 sensor makers, and its incomplete if Sony is not there.
However, the common public should have expectations in control. Sony can't bend laws of physics.
And there's a significant difference between 1/1.2 inch of 808 Pureview, 1/1.5 inch of Lumia 1020 and 1/1.8 inch of this sensor.
However, agreed that this sensor should be good for some quality photos & more versatility using these techniques...

Unfortunately this RGBW dual bayer filter comes with one disadvantage. Since it has only half the number of RGB subpixels compared to regular RGB sensors, it requires the interpolation of data to produce full resolution image unlike quad bayer that only needs to "swap" pixels around(array conversion) through signal processing. This will result in even lower detail than quad bayer let alone traditional bayer layout, so expect 38MP photos coming out of this sensor to be softer and more artifact-prone than ones from Mate 20 Pro.
On a positive note, this setup has huge merit when it comes to low light performance. Because of white pixels, this sensor literally is twice as sensitive to the light as the equally sized sensor with quad bayer filter. Also the disadvantage I mentioned above isn't likely to cause any problem when the software performs pixel binning which is the way this sensor is supposed to be used, and unlike RGB+B&W setup, this one can be used for recording videos as well without facing issues related to limitation in hardware. I would still hugely appreciate a dedicated B&W sensor for monochrome photography though.

Anonymous, 12 Dec 2018Sony has these sensors for mobile cameras and they don't pu... moreThey have something reserved for their own devices. I bet it'll be even better than this.
Another case to take into account is that Huawei might've worked with Sony to specifically produce this sensor for them. Meaning, Sony probably didn't intend to manufacture such sensor like this, but Huawei paid them to make it (with the schematic diagram coming from Huawei of course).

Stan, 12 Dec 2018Sony Mobile has to compete for sensor production of Sony Im... moreThe problem with that move is that the algorithms are optimized differently across all different sensors.
Same camera algorithms won't be able to produce images from, say IMX400, to some proper APS-C sensor from Sony Alpha cameras and such. Main reason is the fact that the two sensors have different capabilities.
For instance, APS-C Sony sensors could happily go beyond ISO 102400 for better low light image sensitivity, but a half-inch Sony IMX sensor wouldn't be able to achieve the same thing, and it will end up producing a bigger mess than what they already have today.
I'd say they invest some more to software performance, because they actually nailed it this year, and it only needs a bit more polishing to be perfect.

Sony Mobile will never use this one.
Their sensors are exclusive.
imx300 and imx400 have never been available to any other OEM.
And this sensor is not 3-layer stacked.
Do not forget that imx300 and imx400 came with the Premium.
Xz4 might use imx400 too, then new sensor in september.
