Curtisjr1, 12 Dec 2018Sony Sensor & Leica Optics.Leica branded optics, not Leica optics.
There's a huge difference. Its the same as Sony Zeiss branded lenses in their camera dept, Panasonic Leica and Samsung SneiderCreuznach also come to mind. What happens is the company develops a lens, then sends designs and prototypes to their optics partner. If a lens is good enough to carry the optics partner's brand, it will be allowed to get the logo slapped on the barrel. Obviously for a cost...

Anonymous, 12 Dec 2018Sony has these sensors for mobile cameras and they don't pu... moreSony Mobile has to compete for sensor production of Sony Imaging just like any other brand. Big players, like Samsung, will always get top priority.
Also keep in mind that they also must keep costs under control. Sony Mobile might be getting a discount from Sony Imaging for also being a part of Sony, but its not as big as you'd think.
Their current 19mp sensor used in XZ models is awesome, and in sharpness and texture it outperforms even the P20 Pro. The largest problem for them is the White Balance algorithm, which over the years proved to be not very accurate. Sony Mobile should probably stop developing photo algorithms on their own, and just buy/borrow them from Sony Photo.
Unlike Sony Mobile, Sony Photo have excelled in every way over the past few years. My only complaint with their cameras - egronomics could be much better.

I imagine it's a big money maker for the company same as samsung provides displays for other OEMs. They probably don't sell enough phones and cameras so provide for others to get that coin!

I think it's a fake. 1/1.8" type sensors don't have a diagonal of 9.99mm. 9.99mm would have a crop factor of 4.3 and that's not a 1/1.8" type sensor. 1/1.8" type sensors have a crop factor like 4.8 or 4.9. 4.3 would be rather a 1/1.6" type sensor. Furthermore 38 megapixels don't make sense because pixel binning would only give you 9.5 megapixels. Moreover the pixel size in pixel-binning mode (2.24 micrometers) means that the sensor would be larger than the sensor of the P20 Pro, which has a pixel size of 2.0 micrometers in pixel binning mode.

TPAA, 12 Dec 2018More big marketing words to fool people into thinking they ... moreBut who would (or need to) watch photos from a smartphone on a TV?
Of course, smartphone cameras aren't comparable to DSLR, but they don't try (or need) to be that.
So what's the point in your remark?)
