Since you have already unlocked bootloader, installed TWRP, Xiaomi.EU ROM will probably be the CHOICE for an ad-free, faster MIUI. This is done by the work of Igor. You can't depend on Xiaomi to release an ad-free MIUI in the future.

The claim that Xiaomi is only about making money is wildly wrong.

Their s... morecorrect..Xiaomi should stop releasing Android One devices...they have proved that they are not good at providing timely updates for these devices...their speciality is MIUI and always will be...in my experience i had unlocked the bootloader of my older redmi 5a and tried out many stock android roms..some them were already updated to android pie with latest security patches and google camera...but after a while i gets bored and get back to MIUI...what i am saying is if xiaomi releases an 'ad' free MIUI , then for me its better than any stock roms as i am in for customisation and i did not want to install separate apps for gallery, file manager etc

I just got the update to Miui 10 and I know that it's a old phone but I will use it until it stops working

Their strategy seems to be one where they put these Mi A devices out to get that initial sale. But their priority and resources go to MIUI. Xiaomi might as well stop Android One devices.

Considering even Pixel and Android Ones get only two years, this is commendable. But there are two things here.
1) Since Xiaomi only updates MIUI versions and security patches, which is good enough, they should continue supporting older devices as long as their hardware can take it.
2) Xiaomi needs to have only six devices. A small Redmi compact 4.7 to 5.2 inches, a Redmi Pro 5.4 to 5.8 inches and a Redmi Note 6 inch plus. And the same range in the premium MI series. And a couple of niche devices lines

Well my Redmi 3 Pro was released with Android 5.1 and never received anything higher. Now it's off support. Interesting because a weaker model, Redmi 3S, shipped with Android 6.0.

Still using Mi5 as daily driver. Too bad, it can't handle PUBG on extreme framerate.

My mother also hates updates and any time any update comes along she calls me and is "worried about doing something wrong" and even more worried that the appearance will change. Old folks typically hate adapting to new changes. Even though it in my eyes is a small change, it's a big enough change for them to react.
This is another reason why manufacturers have their own UI, knowing a lot of people stick to the UI they are used to, rather than "learning something new". No matter how similar they all are in general.

Two of the most memorable xiaomi devices ever. I'm sure the dev community will not abandon them anytime soon.

Guess what, I have it and it's still not broken in half. In fact, I bought it despite watching Jerry's video where he broke it in half. I'm not one of those clumsy ppl who sit on their phones. As for general durability, I don't use any case or protectors and it has meet concrete quite a lot of times, usually from sitting height where it slided out of my pocket. Has some bumps on the edge, but that's about it. Being all glass and not shattered after all those drops, it's perfectly fine. It's actually one of better phones I've ever owned and I only paid 250€ for it. Software is a bit wonky sometimes, but in general it's a great experience.

Will the Mi5 be outdated in a few years!? What!? SERIOUSLY!??? A three year old phone will eventually be outdated after even more years? No way! I've never heard of such a thing. Aren't phones supposed to last forever and forever be updated? No? OMG!!! I am traumatized, someone hold me please.
And what's that? A more recent, and higher end flagship at a significantly higher price will last a little bit longer? Wow, I never would have imagined such a obvious thing. . .
Yes, all phones will eventually lose support, duh! The mi5 was a bargain flagship that has received tremendous support, oh and btw it's 1080p IPS display is just as sharp as S8's pentile QHD, heck even sharper for complex images and not just plain text (1284 vs 1140 SPPI).

Darn Xiaomi, stop supporting my $200 phone after 3 years. No updates after 3 years is okay for $500+ phones but definitely unacceptable for < $200 phones!!

It launched with android marshmallow and currently it is running on android 8.1.0 oreo with december security patch. So,you are not right about samsung softwere support for their budget phones.

I had S3, S4 all the way to samsung Note 4, yes hardware is top notch, but software will be getting slower. Display will getting yellowish after a year or two.. even S8 , i know because i try it.
Yes, Mi5 is cheap alternative, but im happy to use it without any hiccup and problem.. its still as fast as brand new even when its only 3/32 version.
Yes it has hardware design flaw, but if only you push to limit like jerryrigeverything, for daily use, this phone can survive drop like another phone.
Longer software support ? Tell me , which Samsung phone has upgraded to 3 major android version ?
Mi5 got 2 major android version, i said it equals to every android flagship except pixel.
And Mi5 has lot of MIUI upgrade, and its not only skin but features like portrait mode bokeh in MIUI 10 even using single cam module like pixel.
I dont feel sad if they drop their software support,. Because i know there will be no MIUI major upgrade in 1 year ahead.
So stop
