Also…… you or anyone for that matter seems to forgot about something, iPhone and iOS doesn't have any other OEM ( where as Android is different). And my xperia XZ hardly consider as 3 year ( and I don't think that I will get the pie. Even more weird is that it isn't version 8.0.1 or 8.1.0 or anything. But just Android version 8.0.0)

As for Apple, Apple handle their OS as well as their phones. If iPhones are getting outdated pretty fast ( or faster than Android) in getting updates. Then you should definitely not buy a iPhone.

People are weird when comparing phones. See that other guy here who talk about the xiaomi a1 phone his dad! Since when does old people enjoy getting new( and fast ) update for their phones ( especially OS upgrade ) where the UI would made some changes.

I got my mom the a1 too, and she doesn't want to make any changes to her phone ( or install update). Cause she already get used to the phone and the UI ( and all the apps she use and their placement in the phone).

Darius89, 20 Dec 2018zte and huawei are against sanctions that is against islami... moreFirst of all, you should give the solid evidences that these companies have done before you ask.

If you don't have any proof, then don't follow what other peoples said.

FromChinaWithLove, 20 Dec 2018So, people brought affordable high end and budget mid range... moreBecause the five-year old iPhone 5S got iOS 12 and was practically REVIVED in the process due to significant speed improvements.

As I see it, you are buying a phone to simply get the update faster ( and doesn't care about anything). The fact that you said that it is a phone for your dad, and if that's the case. Are you the one using it or your dad?

Cause I got my mom the A1 too( because of the Android One thing), and last time I checked it, there's a new OTA update show up( I just haven't install it for her yet). Also, how often do elderly people care about update on their phones ( after using the A1 for a few months, my mom doesn't want me to touch her phone or change anything in it cause she is already used to it).

It sounds to me that all you did here is complaints, complaints, and complaints some more.

Also, when you're doing the comparison, you are doing it with both phone on their release price. You're comparing S8 ( ATM) to where you got your xiaomi's phone new!

Much better to flash RR Custom Rom to your Snapdragon 650 "Kenzo". Than to go and side-grade to a Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, let alone the inferior RN 6 Pro.

A durable phone (non-glass), that's easy to service (battery), and has a developer community (Custom Rom)....that my friend is your ticket to repel Planned Obsolescence.... an act which is taken by every OEM this day and age.

Android One program means they should've gotten the updates before everyone else did, regardless if it's released a year ago.
But it's still unfair to compare the Nokia 6 2017 to the Mi A1, as it's not an Android One device to begin with.
The fact that Nokia has already updated MOST of its Android One devices to Pie already makes Xiaomi a disappointment when it comes to updates.
They don't have to even change anything in the UI, except to add some of their MIUI apps to it, and even when considered, Nokia's UI is more heavily customized than Xiaomi's stock UI, so what's stopping them from releasing the updates as quickly as Nokia can?

                I know!
                Money......

Marco M, 20 Dec 2018One could buy the Mi5 at a low price years ago, and it got ... moreWell let me tell you, the Mi 5 is practically a phone that's going to be outdated in the next couple of years.
Its durability is quite weak, as JerryRigEverything has tested it.
Sure it's cheaper, but you get what you pay for.

You aren't looking far enough. I believe that the S8 has already dropped its prices to even as low as $200 a few months ago.
But sure, let's assume that it's still around $500.
For that price, it has a QHD+ Super AMOLED HDR display, which is still fantastic by today's standards and can be considered among the best still, while the Mi 5 is just as average as you'd expect it for an IPS LCD panel from 2 years ago.

In terms of support, Samsung has a reputation of supporting their flagships for 3 years in security updates, and the Note 4 is a living proof of it. I believe that it matters more than radical UI changes, which basically changes nothing but the way that people use their phones.
Comparing Samsung Experience to MIUI, the latter is a direct iOS copy with features that are already present on Samsung UI from 2 years ago, and as far as optimizations are concerned, one can just install a Nova Launcher and enjoy the smoothness of a flagship Galaxy phone. Same can be done with MIUI, so it's up to the user's preference.

You know the S8 may be a bit more expensive than the Mi 5, but I'd rather take it for a little longer life support and a better overall package than the Mi 5.
Even when considering, the even older S7 Edge is almost as cheap as the Mi 5 already, but has superior battery life, still better display, arguably similar performance, about as long life support, superior cameras, better durability (IP68 vs none), and it can be found pretty much everywhere you are, since it was a very popular phone during its time.

I mean, everything have 2 side. If Chinese are as paranoid or "crazy" as Americans are, they can also say that "but the server is in the US" or "Apple saying on us for the US with the iPhone". But then again, I've never see that kind of post from any Chinese media sites.

Like seriously? How many update/(upgrade for the OS) do you get from the well-known brand with a higher price tag?

I'm using the xperia XZ that came out late 2016 and that is as consider a flagship phone from Sony.
Guess what? My xperia is is still in Android version 8.0.0. while I did got a few updates as sony stated as system update ( plus security update). But my phone is still in Android version 8.0.0 ( and I don't think that this phone will get the Pie).

Even the Mi4W got MiUI10, even though it's based on Android 6.0.1. That's more than 4 years of support, let alone that it has official Lineage support with very stable Oreo.
