The only reason most people buy Xiaomi phones is - *price*. Nothing else. And the average user is quite satisfied with what they get. Most Xiaomi phones have a good price to performance ratio. And those you mentioned have the best, I agree with you on that.

I don't see it as a terrible thing. Three years of support is more than enough, not to mention quite a big chunk of people buy Xiaomi devices for cheap hardware and simply slap custom ROMs on them.

Xiaomi may not provide Android version upgrades, but they have provided security updates as well as MIUI updates for about 3 years now on my Redmi Note 3, which I had bought for a mere ~150$.

sdk09, 20 Dec 2018Probably flooding the market with a lot of phones is leadin... morebut you can have custom ROM's cause was the reason why people still buy them, i dont belive a "blind" person who know about root and modding and so on wold buy a Xiaomi to use stock MIUI...

As much beauty as they are i belive custom ROM's is the best thing to have on a Xiaomi phone, not the MTK ones but the QCM ones yes.

So, the only people i see buying this kind of phones and using stock all are girls, old people, and people who dont know nothing about root and etc, for that people is ok.

More phones doesnt even mean more sales, cause some comparisons in people who dont know what to buy leav them the road what is right to what is wrong and that low end or equal phones still to sell and doesnt count, in few years we will see reports of that.

For now best Xiaomi till date price vs performance wise are Mi8/8SE, Mi A2 and Poco. Period.

Not quite... Note 3 user here, never got updated past Marshmallow, which the device came with out of box.

"However, overall the way they've made their system, it's almost to appease their fanboys and not enthusiasts or average users."

I disagree. The update does appease to the average user. I have many relatives (average users) who are happy with the new stuff they keep receiving via updates. They don't really care about Android versions, and as long as they're getting security updates, it doesn't make that big a difference..

it's been 3 weeks that xiaomi drops support and now you are saying ?
it's been about one week that i sold it and now i have samsung a8+ ...
xiaomi is completely so weak for software and hardware support .

Whatever it is, you have to know while buying a Xiaomi device that you cannot expect Android version upgrades soon, and it has been like that since the beginning.

                ONE THING EVERYONE SHOU KNOW:

Xiaomi came, it promise everything, they grow with that, people start liking.

now, they think they can do everything people trust the brand...maybe they fall from some high because people dont demand so many "same phone" specs every 2 or 3 months.

Xiaomi dont need to do that and if this thing continue, i belive the brand will lost value and consumer trust since they dont be fast enough to provide updates. i like Xiaomi but they are running too quickly and is not a good thing...

Then I will compare the Nokia 6 (2017) to the Mi A1, as it is a 2017 device, and guess what no android Pie for it! Nokia 6.1 (2018) has pie, and as do Mi A2 (also 2018).

I stopped reading you comment after this comparison.

One can buy the S8 now for a lower price than it was launched a little over a year ago, sure, but not three years ago as it wasn't even available yet. So you're just rambling complete nonsense.

And please do tell where the S8 is available new at $200. Cheapest version is about $520 now here in Norway, and $467 in the US. Even refurbs are at around $349. And do you really think the S8 will get a different fate? It will not get android 10, it started with android 7 and will end on android 9. Same thing, only higher price and horrible edge design screen and touchwiz all the way until it get One UI, after more than 1.5 years of touchwiz awfulness.

RIP Redmi Note 3, Mi 5 (MIUI 7 - MIUI 10.x). It will receive Global Stable MIUI 10.x next year January (probably) as the last one. For developer version, it will be discontinued as the LAST Global Stable MIUI rolls out.

For next year, I suggest you guys go and use custom ROM / stick with Global Stable ROM if you still hold dear to it. OR it's just time to upgrade to Redmi Note 5 at least, but that comes with Anti-Rollback Protection being enforced UNLESS you unlock bootloader & install Xiaomi.EU ROM. Another way is if you don't mind the NOTCH, get Redmi Note 6 Pro. Another option is to get 2nd hand Redmi Note 4 but that is also going the way of the dodo as MIUI 11.x will possibly be the LAST one.

So going by Xiaomi's software upgrade logic as of now, all Xiaomi smartphones and tablets as of current will only get 4 major MIUI updates which is down from the previous 5 major MIUI updates last year.

IMHO, now it's just another PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE for you to upgrade to a newer device every 3 years which OFTEN costs MORE than what you have. Although I applaud Xiaomi for giving long MIUI software support for it's devices, I am guessing Google (ever since Treble enforcement to smartphone OEMs since Android Oreo) is FORCING smartphone OEMs like Xiaomi to only have 3 year software support, in line with Google's update policy.

Marco M, 20 Dec 2018If your dad for some reason is very urgently awaiting andro... moreThe reason that I went for an Android One device for my dad is for very fast software updates, not for BETA usage.
Take for instance, the Nokia 6 2018 is already on Android Pie, and that's just another Android One mid range device as the Mi A1 is.
The fact that stock Android Pie is still a BETA for Xiaomi is upright hilarious. They can't be trusted in updates no matter what. Yes, they're better than some other Chinese vendors, but they don't make Xiaomi that good in software.
Just take this, the Redmi 5 with SD450 SoC is getting Portrait mode for both rear and front cameras, while my Redmi 5 Plus with SD625 will only get it on the front camera.
If it's not yet ridiculous, only Indian and some other regions are receiving the Face Unlock feature on MIUI 10.
Not enough? New Messenger 4 look doesn't seem to have been released to any Xiaomi phone ever. And I disgrace that, because my friend's inferior Vivo Y69 already received it a few months ago, and another friend of mine's Huawei Mate 10 Lite/Nova 2i already did as well last month. Even my friend's Galaxy A6+ 2018 got it already as well, so when does Xiaomi plan to release it EVEN for their high end phones at least?
                                  This is just disgusting....

nik.007, 20 Dec 2018Xiaomi had 2 main USP's that helped them sell so many units... moreDo you expect more than 3 years support, in any price range? It's not like the device is dead after the last update. Next MIUI version is +/- 6-7 months away, and the RN3 and Mi5 will be 3.5 years old at that point.

Nexus 5x and 6p gets no official pie, and that's essentially google's own hardware. They got two updates after launch.

RN3 and Mi 5 came with MIUI 7 and the last one they received is MIUI 10, that is three updates. And it brings a lot of new features, not just a name change. Mi 5 was based on android 6 and ended up on android 8, same as the nexus phones. Again, comparable to googles own phones.

So this is essentially proof that Xiaomi is the way to go if wanting phones that does get updates, and no just in name change. Great job Xiaomi!

People expecting even longer android support have unrealistic expectations. You could always switch to apple and iphone if most recent version number is your first priority, instead of actual features, flexibility and performance per price.

Anonymous, 20 Dec 2018I bought my Mi5 for $200. There wont be any other device fr... moreYeah, because people can now easily get a SD835-powered Galaxy S8 for the same price

Sathish, 20 Dec 2018Did you asked the same to Oppo, Vivo, etc.. also the budget... moreOthers doing worse doesn't get the wrong doings of Xiaomi to be right.
It's very clear that they're marketing their so-called 'MIUI' as a major selling point for all of their devices (sans Mi A series).
The fact that they're dropping the support even for MIUI updates is downright disappointing. I'd expect that they won't support OS upgrade for long in order to focus more on MIUI, but this is just ridiculous.

As for the other brands, at least they don't make any promise that they cannot fulfill. Sony somehow supports their mid rangers for a year and 2 for security updates. Forget about Oppo and Vivo for mid rangers, as they'd only be good in updates in the high end territory.
Motorola was ruined by Lenovo, who never releases OS upgrades at all. If we talk about Motorola before Lenovo owned them, they're one of the greatest, if not the best when it comes to software updates, and even beats Samsung phones.
