The Korean company is also going for artificial enhancements of the low-light photos.

All these companies putting some ... morePeople need 40Mpix not because of one image - but using techniques like pixel binning which can offer even more zoom than your optical zoom. Not to mention 40 Mpix shots are required if you want to take much larger pictures that you want to see clarity.

trajcevasilev94, 23 Dec 2018Finally someone said it. All these companies putting some ... moreYou have no idea how the 40MP works in the mate 20 pro, do you? They use pixel binning to make the 40mp photos into 10mp photos making the 1.0um pixel size into a 2.0 pixel size to increase light in the photos. 40mp is only to be used when in good lighting, otherwise the default is 10mp.

All these companies putting some useless stuff, Huawei with a big 40MPix gimmick.
      Seriously, who needs 40 megapixels.
Are we going back to 2012 when Nokia had such cameras.
The only great phone producing company is LG. They have the best recording out there, it just outperforms EVERY smartphone on the market, including the Note 9,iPhone Xs Max, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, and many more and with 0 issues/bugs on their camera system.
Just look at how bad the recording is on the Mate 20 Pro.
Full of issues and bugs. The software isn't made well for recording. Those stuff just aren't right. Zooming, Ultra - Wide Angle Lens recording, it's all just a mess. It's even said in the gsmarena Mate 20 Pro report.

About thus, it's nice to see Samsung adding this feature, and a lot of other fans (ixeeps, etc..) are just b!tching.
Seriously, what's so wrong with this. I don't see anything wrong to have this feature, as many other devices have had it (starting from Huawei).
Even the cheap Xiaomi devices have it as well.
That isn't the problem and it should end here. Please no more of that better lowlight, worse lowlight.
The solution, simple: Dual Aperture, and this Night Mode option, then you can get some amazing night shots.
The thing is that phone manufacturers should just improve the main sensor instead of adding more and more. Imo 2 cameras is already enough for me.
Camera 1: Main sensor with Dual Aperture,OIS,EIS,4K,etc... and it being 20~40 Megapixels should do the job
Camera 2: Secondary Ultra Wide Angle Sensor, OIS, EIS, 4K,etc... and it being 12~20 Megapixels should do the job.
No need for Telephoto Lens since the main sensor can do the job, similar to what Google has done, and what Nokia did in 2012.
40 Megapixels can't do better low photography, because the megapixels are only here for detail, and when in low light conditions the main camera can't capture lots of detail because it's dark. Yeah 40 Megapixels can help further reducing image noise, but they can't be the main reason for low light photography.
Samsung with their dual aperture system on 12MPIX cameras, they manage to take some stunning low light photos, without any much of image noise, compared to where the Pixel 3XL,without dual aperture, captures far more brighter low light photos but it has lots of image noise.

The solution for this situation would be for companies to stop selling and making gimmicky stuff. 2 cameras are enough as I said. All that's needed is improving the software and the camera a bit and you can end up with stunning images. The main sensor can also do depth field images (bokeh/portrait mode), so there is no need for depth sensor. Nor there is a need for upping the megapixels as they won't mean anything, because many companies nowadays just strive to put more and more sensors.
What will we have in the following 10~20 years. The whole back will be filled with cameras?
I will say again, 2 are enough. And putting maximum of 40 megapixels, not for making the image more clear or for low light images/videos, but for zooming. Kinda like what Nokia did in 2012.
40 megapixels is a gimmick, and will be only when not used properly. Huawei did this mistake on their Mate 20 Pro. 20 Megapixels could've straight done the job. Even my dad's old Galaxy A3 can still take some sharp and detailed images.
The only time 40 megapixels will come in handy is when there will be a situation like the one with Nokia in 2012,or on a only dual lens device, where as it will be there to help with the zoom.

Finally, getting to acknowledge the power of computational photography. Next, someone could come up with a membrane or liquid zoom lens. Guaranteed to revolutionize phone camera photography.
