The punch hole screen camera is the way forward

30 December 2018
In order to have a good-looking phone from the front, we have to go through some unpleasant notch and cutout stages.

Rubbish. Hole is the worst thing which happened to phones since designers decided to jazz up the dull but functional rectangle. And the idea of bezelless phone is totally misguided.

I don’t see how a punch hole or notch (big or small) is any different they both block out the top of the screen and I’m more than happy to tolerate either option until the camera can go under the display. (I don’t like sliders, camera pop outs, two screened phones as I like having a case on my phone). Phones with big chins is my biggest dislike with these bezelless phones.

I still think screen holes are ugly because they ruin the symmetry of the screen. The whole point of increasing the screen to body ratio is to improve the design (nobody is really bothered by +/- 4mm or extra vertical size, face it...) and when the symmetry is removed, that goal is never achieved. A small bezel like those on the S8, S9 and note 8-9 series has always been the ideal to me; no need to shrink things further.

AnonD-762416, 30 Dec 2018What's the point? You can't see anything on a 3-4" screen. ... moreYeah you're missing the point. The point is some of us want decent hardware that actually still fits in your pocket and can be used single handed. I still have an M9 and even that barely fits in my pocket. Every time I sit down, it digs into my hip and I need to take it out to sit comfortably. Remember when the HD2 was considered "huge" with its 4.3" screen? Did everyone back then say, "yeah, you can't see anything on that screen"? We're not asking for the world here. Just some 4.5" - 5" options that aren't crippled to shit with mediatek or low end snapdragons. The XZ2 compact was great until they decided it would be a really smart move taking out the 3.5mm connector.

What if an enemy hides just behind the camera hole and shoots me in PUBG??🤔

Another helpful step would be to....you know....get rid of the chin!!

A small screen doesn't need all the bells and whistles you get with current flagships. Just buy a small midrange phone and you're fine...

Waterdrop notch is much nicer than the "camerahole" in the screen.

Notch or not. That isn't the point — though punch hole is better. From design point of view the problem nowadays is asymmetry. Only Apple has done it right. The "big" bezels don't matter as long they are the same thickness all around, giving us the feel of no bezels at all. The X/Xs bezels are huge and Xr's even more, but they don't feel like it. And that is because they are the same on every side. All "bezeless" Android phones look like shit because of the chin and because not even the top and side bezels are the same.

This obsession with small/nonexistent bezels is the reason we see such atrocious designs, like the notches and these little holes. I mean c'mon, you can't tell me you HONESTLY like them.

Look like dead pixel. So eye irritating to see

"the notch, introduced by Apple and the iPhone X back in 2017" - lame fake news. The notch was brought to the world by Essential.

I think the small view-finder screen on the back is better to be honest. The small display is probably cheaper than the extra camera.

Another solution could be to place the camera closer to the corner and use sligthly thicker bezels there, but otherwise thin edges all around. It may be more forgiving than the thick top and bottom bezels.

It is fine if the screen to body ratio increases but I would still like to have small phone with flagship specs. All current flagships are humongous compared to iPhone SE. It easy to endure all notch monstrosities when the phones are way too big for one handed use anyway.
