The punch-hole takes some of the screen, especially that it is not entirely close to the top of the device. And it just gets worse with the S10 Plus model where the blackhole is larger.

Anonymous, 26 Dec 2018Well that's why it's 24mp. There's a balance and you're not... moreSince it's only the front camera that's taking up the front space of the phone now, they might've made it possible to use a much larger sensor as well, hence the large hole, and so a 24MP 1/2.55" sensor with f/2.0 lens could still yield a much better overall result than their current 8MP 1/3.06" f/1.7 one.
And it might be f/2.0 for much wider FoV as well.
For low light, it might've adopted the advanced pixel binning technology that Huawei uses with their rear cameras.
When performed, it might drop the resolution all the way down to 6MP, but pixel size increasing twice, from say about 0.7um up to 1.4um for incredible low light shots, and still for daylight you get a massive boost in image quality with much more detailed 24MP pure images.

AnonD-762416, 26 Dec 2018Software is 100% irrelevant when you're comparing hardware ... moreIn theory, only hardware performance/efficiency matters.
In practice, it's a system which is greatly affected by software.

I have both the Samsung and LG phones that have AOD modes. The early Samsung phones used to drain a lot of power, enough to tell the difference to LG devices. The new ones match the LG devices in terms of battery wasted. However, the LG's AOD feature is and has always been very dim. Barely usable like a Night Stand and utterly useless during the day. Hence, I stopped using it. The Samsung AOD I've gone through opposite way and use it, just to show the time and presence of notifications, its bright to see under direct sunlight, not obnoxious, and a small hit to battery life.

Anonymous, 26 Dec 2018Yeah that was just embarrassing for Samsung. How on earth c... morehard to understand.. ha ? some people just have no brain..! even if its not amoled.. it on only a small part of display . not the entire display .. and will consume some battery .. but not as much as dramatic comment talk .. even amoled always on display consume battery .. yes lcd will consume more.. but not with much.. if you care that much about 5% of the battery than turn it off.. for me its no problem chargeing the phone at 9mp and not as u at 10 mp..

AnonD-762416, 26 Dec 2018Yeah, that's a BS argument if I ever saw one. What's the so... moreSoftware & hardware go hand-in-hand. The LG V30 with it's 3300 mAh battery had a better battery endurance than Samsung S8+ with it's 3500 mAh one. Reason? Software optimization.

I won't further argue with you as you're not the listening type.

The fact that Samsung does more while it's in always on mode is something the user benefits from. Make the always-on display do something useful....

Whackcar, 26 Dec 2018Well then you've clearly not seen modern LCD phones or rese... moreNow I remember that LG G5 "always on". It was useless as it only "works" in pooly lit environments as the "brightness" was near zero. It's easy to have great battery life if you can't use it in real life.
LCD variants like Micro LED would work similarly to OLED, giving REAL always-off. But, I'm not sure if anyone's managed to produce a phone sized screen using that panel type.

AnonD-762416, 26 Dec 2018It's useless on LCD as it drains too much battery. So, yeah... moreWell then you've clearly not seen modern LCD phones or researched on the subject.

The LG G5 did not have a secondary display. It had a 5.3" IPS LCD display in comparison to Samsung S7's 5.1" Super AMOLED display. Yet the LG phone had lower AOD power consumption thanks to more optimized software.

Zzzzzzz ... Boring ... Pretty useless stuff. They don't have anything new and come up with poor gimmicks to justify the bigger price than the S9 model. Ihope You people realize that S10 will more expensive that the S9?
But you don't care. You have the new samsung device, something to brag about.

That old LG "always on", wasn't that the one with the fugly split display using a pointless mini display on the top fringe?

How on earth can you get better battery with aod on an LCD when the OLED in question was a more efficient display and is only using a few pixel to light up the aod

AnonD-762416, 26 Dec 2018The part where they write "(the A8's) LCD screen" probably ... moreThat's no excuse. There are a ton of LCD Display holding phones that offer AOD.

Back in 2016, Samsung & LG were among the first ones to launch with AOD support, and guess what? LG's AOD software had better power efficiency than Samsung's.

                              AOD impact:

                              Samsung S7: 31 hours
                              LG G5: 10 hours

You can read about this on GSMArena's review of both phones (the battery life section). The point being that with proper optimization, LCDs can offer AOD without problems.

Big deal . Motorola has been implementing gesture control for the camera for ar least 2 years , and it's done without touching the screen ! And also with the device's screen locked .

Shanti Dope, 26 Dec 2018Because of less sharp results? An aperture that's too wide... moreWell that's why it's 24mp. There's a balance and you're not considering the whole idea.
The front camera has larger pixels and f1.7.
So in good conditions yes the sharpness will be good with this. The actually dynamic range and quality for another discussion.
But under medium to low light and night now the pixels are smaller and aperture dimmer. 100mp image with small pixels and dim aperture will still look like a noisy mess with poor detail.

An aperture that's too wide would result in softer photos, hence Samsung's solution of dual aperture for the S9 and Note 9 series, as well as their clamshell phones (f/1.5 for low light, f/2.4 for daylight and other scenarios).

A really bad idea as it smudges the lense. Then you need to close the camera again to clean the smudges
