Essential Phone discontinued, company working on 'next mobile product'

29 December 2018
It sounds more like PR speak for 'we're still alive', but it could also be a PH-2 (or Phone 2?) in the making.

Anonymous, 29 Dec 2018Pixel are only known for good camera and essential is known... moreThat's all the good Pixel is known for, the rest is full of bugs. Lol at you.

Don't care what the haters say. My favorite smartphone of all-time. I no longer have the urge to buy any more phones thanks to the Essential Phone. Even the Pixel 3 feels like a waste. The single most underrated smartphone ever. Best $249.55 I've ever spend on a quality smartphone.

      Top 10
      1. Essential Phone
      2. LG G5
      3. Apple iPhone SE
      4. LG V20
      5. Xiaomi Mi 3
      6. HTC One (M7)
      7. Apple iPhone 4
      8. Nexus One
      9. Apple iPhone
      10. Nokia N82

        1. Get RID of the Titanium and Ceramic. That's like Vertu level rubbish.
        2. Keep the price within the range of a new phone.
        3. Andy Rubin's salary should be in proportion to the sales. Right now a Huge chunk of the expenses include his salary.
        4. Aim fo the BEST camera Experince.
        5. Be generous with the RAM (Gb).
        6. Get 3.5mm jack, wireless charging, expandable storage and water resistance.
        7. Get the next generation OIS with sensor shift (or dual IS).
        8. Pick up some of the best Sony sensors and some good chip (Snapdragon 855). And ensure the quality of photo and video is among the best.
        9. Keep the price at 1/2 of the Apple or Samsung Flagships (Samsung throws in expensive accessories like wireless charging pads or AKG headphones for free, so it's cheaper than Apple if one takes that in along with the specs).
        10. Tune the screen well. Get Samsung as the sully partner if it's AMOLED or stick with LCD.

I disliked the initial hype about it but I love it since it got cheaper and still got timely updates.

They came into the market with a half-baked product and underestimated how tough it was to succeed

I wish them good luck with their next phone. They're one of the most serious manufacturers, and their Essential was a really well-made phone with fast updates and no bullshit.

To be fair, PH-1 was a very decent phone. Sure,it's camera was a con and could have been improved (and people after the updates were a bit happier) but it didn't have a huge notch, and the camera notch totally gets out of your way after a period of usage. Also, it's back was made out of ceramic. Who does that these days? It's incredibly solid and scratch resistant. Check out JerryRigEverything's videos concerning the PH-1. He did a bend test, which the PH-1 passed and he made a drop test, where the ceramic back came out incredibly solid after a lot of falls on concrete. Say what you want, but for a start-up company, the phone turned out pretty nice in general. Too bad we didn't see a successor for this year/

Anonymous, 29 Dec 20184000mah battery, sd card, headphone jack. 855. Good camera.... moreThat sounds more like the next Pocophone

Anonymous, 29 Dec 2018Maybe next phone they add essential features and the phone ... moreYeah who knew lol

I have a couple of these phones and still love them. They feel solid, work great, with the Pixel Camera, for me it is still a great phone. I also have a OnePlus6t and a Huawei Mate 10 Pro. They are better, but for some reason, I keep coming back to the PH1 for my daily driver. It feels good in my hands. No complaints. Sorry to see them go but am looking forward to the next iteration.

Take what they had in the PH-1 and fix all of the above with 5G and at a competitive price ($550-$650) and we've got a winner. In this age of terrible phones, I am rooting for Rubin's gang for the PH-2!

ethereal, 29 Dec 2018Reading this comment on my Lumia 1920.Even I had Lumio 950XL fantastic mobile, replaceable battery, dual SIM etc, AMOLED display, but 3 GB RAM. I was wrongly betting for MS which abandoned the ship! Enough of experiments!!

Yeah. I also had a L520. Great phone.
Windows Phone died because of the lack of apps.
