Weekly poll: what's the ideal screen size?

06 January 2019
The aspect ratios of smartphone screens have been growing taller and the diagonals grow with them. How much is too much?

I have a galaxy note 9, I love the 6.4 in 18.5.9 aspect ratio, I only why the top and bottom of the note 9 were note there it would have been great as this top and bottom bezels at times hinder my palm from experiencing the true one hand model in a 📱.

            4.2" is ideal.

I vote the 5.2 because it is very handy/pocketable.

Genesis, 09 Jan 2019There's nothing like ideal screen size. It's a matter of pr... moreIndeed. Let us have VARIETY, and not just near identical slabs with different labels on them....

Some want large for two hand operation some want small for one hand operation, some want them very small to be easier to have in a bag, some want a real keyboard,.... to each their own.

Personally I would love something of a width around 65mm, minimal side bezels, removable battery, top specs, and landscape QWERTY slider. The chance of that happening: 0.001% I guess *G* The least unlikely to do it would be HMD/Nokia, a revival of e.g. the E7

Currently 55% of respondents want phones 5.8" or less, why are we so underserved by phone makers?

There's nothing like ideal screen size. It's a matter of preference

None of the above. I own the mi max 3 and I can't go back to smaller screens.

Anything else is just too big and too useless.
And of course burden for the pockets.

After using a GaIaxy J4+,, would rather go for a Tablet than a 6" screen phone. Its not as fancy as it might appear.I would say anything less than 5.5 inch is ideal. And 5 inch should be perfect. I am using a Nokia 3.1 and a Galaxy J2 core and I'm very comfortable with these two's screen size. However now that even Apple is opting for 6"+ screen for their smartphones,I guess most people will vote for the same, as we can see it from the poll result.

                                    7-inch. Sweet.

Definitely 6 is a golden number, any larger and you have unwieldy device barely fitting in a pocket

It is an onscreen toucpad-ish solution for android.
Havent tried it. Went for a XZ1 Compact on sale at black friday, because my old main phone broke recently.

the XZ2 Compact I haven't tried, and then there is finding a good case an see if it is still usable with one hand only. It was quite a bit more expensive than the XZ1 Compact on the black friday sale.

I can confirm my suspicion, I do actually surf more on the more compact phone than I did on the one I had before, because I can use it in on hand, in situations where I would otherwise not be able to use the phone because of the need of two hands, when I could not, or when I might as well use the computer if two hands are needed.
But I would still like the keyboard option.
And I really like my idea of a blackberry styled touchpad-keyboard, but with the right keys to handle the gesture compensation tricks needed when navigating with a single finger on a touchpad instead of a screen. If it extends from the phone, I could probably manage a 6" phone as long as I can use 1 hand control.
But for the all screen UI, even the XZ2 compact is probably pushing the limits.
The XZ4 leaks don't sound too promising... 21:9 screen would make it too tall, at the same width as the xz1 compact, and the XZ2 compact is ever so slightly wider... so if they do a XZ4 compact, it would have to be quite different from the regular.
I do hope some other company will finally realize that there probably is a market, even if Sony didn't quite manage to catch it...
After all, I've read several of reviews with positive comments on the compactness of the Pixel 3... that however isn't compact enough for one hand operation, still there seems to be more and more people realizing that a compacter phone might not be that bad. it comes with some other drawbacks as well though... but the camera software tricks are really cool. It still needs an ultra wide angle, and a tele lens, to take on the best in terms of all round imaging. (or a pair of main cameras in a stereoscopic set-ut instead of the ultra wide angle, for extended wide angle, 3D imaging, and various other functions).

I guess the best we can hope for is Apple stock dropping like a stone, and the developers starting to leave the iOS platform, so the world will be free'd from the Apple influence on the smartphone market, perhaps that would lead to more experimentation again, and innovative companies getting the recognition they need, for new trends to come along.
Unless Apple drops a really good AR glasses phone, with a good text input interface in the shape of e keyboard, that feels good despite being virtual. But I doubt Apple could manage to pull anything like that off. If they aren't going to lead by innovation, the market is better without them in it.
