Weekly poll: what's the ideal screen size?

06 January 2019
The aspect ratios of smartphone screens have been growing taller and the diagonals grow with them. How much is too much?

Jon.SWE, 08 Jan 2019If we are talking one hand operation, of Android/iOS, 5 inc... moreI agree with you. We need an UI-change to make the area of interaction less than the full display for phablets when one hand operated. And NO I'm not talking the current workaround shrinking everything towards the bottom or a corner. It is the UI that need a change, so the full area is used for display, but only part of it for interaction.

This is not limited to the size. even for compact devices with minimal/no bezels, the edges should be passive to avoid unwanted interaction when holding and/or trying to reach across.

I think that people, just like giving up the real keyboard, are also giving up on one handed usage.
It would be great if BOTH hardware options were available, so each could choose what they preferred. If I should buy a device today, ignoring the lack of keyboard, there is really only one decent option available outside Japan:
    https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?nWidthMax=65&nDisplayResMin=2073600

Personally I would prefer a shortened 16:9 device when reducing top/bottom bezels. But an elongated even 21:9 screen on a 65mm device is certainly better than a 16:9 display of same area or diagonal that is widened.
Though inconvenient we /can/ shift the device up and down, and still operate it with one hand. If it is too wide, the only options are the second hand or to put it on a table...

Kiyasuriin, 07 Jan 2019Nani!? Bruh. It's HUGE! I learnt to love phablets. But nope... moreWell, to be honest, I've never seen a Mate 20 X in person. But I think it must be amazing for stuff like reading manga and browsing the internet. So if it's not too inconvenient to carry around, I'd love to have one :D If it becomes available here in Poland, I'll definitely go to a store to play around with it!

And foldable phones are coming soon, so it will be possible to have a large screen and small form factor at the same time, that's going to be even more awesome.

Not taller than 135mm. Max width 70mm. You can surely put at least 5 inch screen. No one ve done it So far. Make that Phone and take my money.

If we are talking one hand operation, of Android/iOS, 5 inch with minimal bezels, 16:9, 18:9 or 21:9, would only work for a percentage in the single digits, perhaps less than one.
One hand operation for those that don't understand, is that the thumb has to be able to reach all parts of the display necessary to control the unit, form a single grip.
Android/iOS requires reaching all over the display, but an UI could be designed so that one would not have to reach all over the display.

If the user want a protective cover on the smartphone even a rubber bumper, we are surely down to less than one percentage of the smartphone users.

This poll is therefore completely flawed. 5" is simply to large for the users looking for one hand operation.
While some, like me would be able to handle a phone a bit bigger than that, and still only use one hand, the excluded percentage of people is simply to big, to be able to represent the users looking for one hand operation.

It is however worth considering that at some point, the display size might get too small for some people to be able to use it one handed, so that they are limited in terms of using the device as a smartphone, ans thus might be forced to get a phone with two hand operation anyhow, for those other factors will be the limiter. A person that would need a sub 4" smartphone for one hand operation, might be able to handle a 6+" phone if two hands are necessary anyhow, and that is quite a big jump.

Of course a lot of people answering here has no desire to use their mobiles with just one hand, even though they could have had something that wouldn't be too small.
I don't quite get those people, but I accept it. If I need two hands, I might as well use an actual tablet, or laptop and get even bigger usable space. And I watch TV/Youtube, on TV/Projector if I'm looking at a visual driven clip. (audio driven clips I might use a phone, but typically tablet or laptop).
For those that want the biggest possible screen, a phablet (large smartphone), will never be the biggest possible screen for that scenario.
I use a smartphone out and about, when I'm typically limited to one hand use. If I weren't, I would bring something bigger. Or on the couch, when I want one hand free to pet my cats, If I'm going to do any serious surfing/typing, I would not use the smartphone at all, if I would have both hands free.

If the UI was different, or a Touchpad (possibly with a few hardware buttons) was used to navigate the device, well then that would change the biggest possible size for one hand operation. Then I would probably be more interested in larger devices. It still needs to feel right holding it in one hand and fit the pockets I need to be able to fit it in (but I'm not a stranger to using bags, so it might get a lot more space than just the pockets of a pair of skinny jeans). But as things are now, my thumb has to reach, and with protective bumper, that means a display size of about 5" max, even at 18:9.

In order for a phone to be mobile, you need to be able to carry it around conveniently and safely. Even with a 4.5" screen, I would limit the overall size to about 2.5"x5", otherwise it won't fit into my pocket (convenient) with a case (safe).

That is a wrong question. It is a matter of phone size, not just the screen.

                                      I would prefer a display:
                                      - between 6.2 and 6.5 inches
                                      - 16:10 aspect ratio
                                      - at least 1200 pixel width
                                      - without any notch, curve or cut-out.
