XiaomiUser, 11 Jan 2019Just to repeat for those who didn't catch my previous comme... moreThe really good thing with Xiaomi is the hardware that comes cheap, but why dont you just install LineageOS on it and be done with all bloware and stuff?
I did this with MI4S, MI5, Mi Note 2, and had no problems at all, my Mi Note 2 is still my current daily driver

If you have a Xiaomi phone (if you don't, install POCO launcher, not sure about other Xiaomi apps but POCO launcher will definitely work)
    1. install Intra app (the DNS changer app) and tick "Show recent DNS requests" at the bottom of the Intra app
    2. turn off Wi-Fi/Mobile Data and turn it back on
    3. you should see pings to Xiaomi or MIUI servers
    4. also, it will ping every few minutes as long as you're connected to the Internet, I'm not sure how long since I didnt time it but check Intra app every few minutes if you're curious

Abunja, 10 Jan 2019Well, was that a bad thing? How bad was it? Do you feel violated?Depends on how you define violated.

I've turned off all ads (yet some still appear, for some unknown reason, probably bugs) as well as turned off all the analytics stuff which most manufacturers do, I disabled all possible Mi apps (most are greyed out and you can't disable it) and I don't have a Mi account synced. It pings Xiaomi and MIUI servers once I'm connected to the Internet via WiFi or Mobile Data (and then pings every few minutes).

After I got fed up with this, I installed XIAOMI.EU rom, which is, to the devs credit, is extremely good with zero ads and smoother than Global rom. I thought the pinging thing is over but nope, even on ads-less Xiaomi.EU rom I'm still getting the pings.
Gave up and use LineageOS instead and the pinging stops. It did ping to Xiaomi and MIUI servers when I install POCO launcher app but it stopped when I uninstalled it.

Depends on how you define violated, but do feel extremely violated now that I did not give Xiaomi the permission to do so and all the "you can turn off ads" bs is just the surface so that more people will buy their phone. Also, their software sucks with tonnes of bugs. Don't take my word (or any other commenter's word) for it, go ahead to MIUI Forum and take a look at the amount of rage in the comments.

My current phone, which is a Xiaomi Mi5, ended development in less than 2.5 years whereas the OP 3/3T, which is released the same year is getting Pie soon. The Mi5 is not my first Xiaomi phone (I've been using their product since Redmi 1S days, so I go wayyy back), but it's definitely my last.

Xiaomi is cheap because you pay the remaining cost with your privacy (and put up with buggy software, despite having more features than AOSP). The end. I learnt this the hard way and I hope whoever reads my comment won't have to. Peace.

Xiaomi is basically taking the opposite approach to Oppo: target online customers with high price/peformance, keep cost and prices low, use little advertising and relying more on word of mouth etc

If Xiaomi jacks up its prices considerably, chances are it will lose a lot of customers, because these are folks who know the hardware. Oppo is selling to customers who don't know (and don't care) what Snapdragon means.

Anonymous, 11 Jan 2019Do you have problems with every phone you have that you nee... moreThat's the problem, when the phone has to be repaired, especially because online shopping is a thing now. Much like Samsung, Xiaomi (at least for Europe) does write nice warranty terms that allow to arrange local places of contact that will deal with the repair process. The real issue is that, despite what is written, in order to start the process you need to contact the "Global Service" which will flatly ignore those terms (they will treat you always as if in India or China).

TL;DR one thing is what is written in the warranty, another altogether is what Xiaomi actually does. Their "Global Service" absolutely sucks, if you buy locally then sure you can just walk to that shop, but if you buy online from one of the Xiaomi's authorized retailers you may experience an unnecessarily painful (and frustrating) repair process. I am speaking from experience, it's like talking to a wall that can only copy-paste responses.

Yes Oppo remains pretty overpriced for their specs. The main reason is they target offline customers. Their ads are literally plastered all over China, even in small towns. They've signed like 10 pop stars to lucrative endorsement deals for advertising.

Furthermore, they are known to pay out the highest commissions to salespeople, so when a customer walks into a store, the salesperson will likely recommend an Oppo or vivo phone.

That $150 price tag better be real. Also, please drop the price of Mi A2. Redmi Note 7 is a midrange killer.

We're not paying a penny to use GSMarena, it is free unlike the case with xiaomi phones. We're spending bucks to buy it and when we buy something we should have full control over it.
