Counterclockwise: the rise, death and rebirth of the slider phone

13 January 2019
Sliders were some of the hottest phones on the market, then the iPhone happened. But now they are back and it's all because of the notch.

As much as I find the folding phone idea cool, it's like oil before it became standard oil, make it better faster and stronger, learn how to make it preserve itself for as long as possible. The two-way mirror dual display phones are probably going to be Samsung's best hope after the S10 to best the punch-hole screen design. Who cares if it is views as a copycat design? OneUI is going to make it all the more practical.

If anything dual displays are more practical. The hardware limitations that come with having a slider disappear and you get to use the camera with the overall best hardware for selfies, plus maybe some multitasking/media features like on the Nubia X. I don't know why a flip out camera like the one on the Honor 7i hasn't been implemented either, even though it's still a mechanism the risk of it being broken goes down significantly since it's a small mechanism, you get to use the camera with the best hardware for selfies and the hardware limitations with a slider disappear, it's a no-brainer.

              Nokia 8600!
Best 1k spent on a phone ever

Seriously hoping that the slider catches on properly. Hate the idea of a notch, drop, or punch-hole least of all. Am due my bi-annual upgrade in two months, and hoping to avoid any of these options. Would like to see something from Huawei, having seen their side-project experiment with the Honor Magic 2 - currently my number one choice, even if it means compromising on camera tech and Chinese ROM.

Sliders are 10 times better than any ugly notch or hole in the screen, hope sliders will be more popular.

Nokia N86 comes to my mind. Screen to slide up for the keypad and also slide down to reveal multimedia keys..miss mine so much..interesting time.

Follow readyfx slider and cosmo comminucator phones - touchscreen keyboard will never be as effective as a good slider when it comes to productivity. It eats up your screen real estate and is way slower when typing emails or longer messages. It doesn't affect the selfies tho, which is what people prioritize nowadays :D

Joseph, 13 Jan 2019No offense, but I hope it dies again. Such ugliness. The real definition of ugly in my opinion, is the behemoth notch found on smartphones like the iPHONE X, Google Pixel 3XL etc, that's real ugly

But let us be realistic, within a year or two we will have front facing cameras looking through the display. So not much point in developing a bidirectional slider in 2019.

And bi directional would not go well with the classic and mechanically stable tilt slide known from multiple Nokias that we expect to see aqain here in Q1 on the "Q-device" / "F(X)"

Now i need physical QWERTY keypad + front camera slider combination with >90% StB ratio.

Well, Find X is still the most beautiful smartphone..
