HMD is more an intermediary than anything else. Its function is basically marketing, tweaking-distributing the Google's software and distribute the loot, I mean the profits...

      https://images.anandtech.com/doci/10879/nokia_hmd_foxconn.jpg

Research and development is provided by Foxconn and the Nokia brand and patents licenses are from Nokia Technologies. HMD agreement is the legal cover to take advantage of the Nokia brand that no longer manufactures phones, but if customers believe it instead of seeing that they are Chinese phones now, is a perfect move and customers thinking that their phones are what they really are not let them to overprice them even with old hardware and maximize profits. The original manufacture facility from Nokia is now property of TNS a subsidiary of FIH Mobile that is a subsidiary of Foxconn too...

So for the actual called Nokia phones, the three companies are poised to work together because they critically depend on assets owned by each other throught the agreements and the acquisitions made..

Dany, 15 Jan 2019Apple at least create and develop their own Operating Syste... moreHMD is a company located in Finland that DESIGN AND DEVELOP their own devices. Foxconn are hired to manufacture and test the devices designed by HMD, nothing else.

HMD don't only lease the Nokia brand, they also source patents and technology from Nokia Technologies. Nokia Technologies also sit on the board of directors for the sake of setting mandatory brand requirements and 'performance related provisions'. In short, Nokia is deeply entangled in HMD, and profit from the HMD profits, but have no financial stake in the company in case it ends up unsuccessful.

If you're going to spout lies and propaganda, at least try to make it believable.

You'll also notice that Apple sell 2 year old models on their site, and the older models are still highly popular in spite of costing more than many brand new Android models. Nobody cares that it has older internals since it's quality that just works.

The SoC change is really probably the biggest improvement between most new models - do you really think people would want to keep buying new phones if they just used something like the SD820 forever? That's more than good enough by all the standards you describe, but there'd be very little incentive to upgrade your phone if it never changed.

Apple at least create and develop their own Operating System and ecosystem, and design TVs, tablets, pcs, their own SoC and now working on their own modems, etc. HMD is a reseller under the Foxconn umbrella, can't be compared, and the workers in all the Nokia 9 leaks where from Foxconn. Nokia is their rented name/brand for marketing purposes. Nothing related to Nokia telecomunications division.

It DOES ALL the task u ... moreYou're not describing a normal smartphone user though, you're describing a massive nerd who only looks at specifications. No company in the world is aiming their phones at the 0.005 % of the market that power-nerds make up.

The massively overwhelming majority of smartphone users care about real-world functionality. What numbers are on a white paper is inconsequential in both SoC, storage and RAM. Literally nobody cares.

Nokia are selling millions of devices, and so your idea that they overprice their units is just downright wrong - people feel they get value for their money. They price their units based on the components, build quality and long software support. Just like how Apple can ask for more money, because their product simply works, has excellent build quality and gets half a decade of software support.

Consumers want products that work. Not products that looks good on paper. Apple and Nokia make quality products that work. Xiaomi make products that only look good on paper.

Normal users could not care less what SoC is in the phone, as long as it fulfils its tasks (design, fluidity, camera performance, screen quality, battery life and build quality).

A least, other brands give you interesting features added to Android, like desktop modes for use your phone as pc, pen for office apps, own algorithms in their cameras, etc. Nokia only give you a basic Android at high price. If you remove those five holes you only watch and old phone. Sure that they'll add a software button to change between cameras over Android basic camera modes and call it Super-Pro Pureview software...

So their work seems basically order a design, copy paste the AOSP images as updates, and resell overpriced hardware.
