Opinion: Bezel-less is not the way forward

20 January 2019
How do you imagine the phones in three years? Foldable? Bezel-less? With invisible cameras? Powered by new long-lasting batteries? Maybe. But bezel-less - that can't be the way forward.

Phones with bezels are convenient, regardless of what companies what to sell. I'm a bezel-yes phone user and I will continue like this until every single phone in earth is bezel-less, new or second hand. Then, I will get a nokia 3310 style phone with numbers. If somebody wants to send me a message, will have to use Telegram, as I don't need a stupid smartphone all the time on to use it.

These bezel less phones are way easier to hold than the phones with huge bezels. First time I got a Galaxy Note 3 I got rid of it ASAP. When iPhones started doing a plus model I went with the iPhone 7 instead. Since then I gone with the iPhone X and 12 Pro along with the Galaxy S10+ and OnePlus 7 Pro. I do have the curve screens tho and been having no issues with the 12 Pro Max. The only reason I'd get a phone with bezels would be for proper stereo front facing speakers like the HTC One M7 I had.

I guess bezel-less phones are not going away, but at least something needs to be done to make using their keyboard simpler.
Going from older 5.5 inch screen phone with bezels to a OnePlus without bezels, and I want to cry some times - typing is extremely uncomfortable.

I miss the old days of phones with bezels. Iphone was recognized by its 1 button at the bottom, Samsung by its 3 buttons and samsung written on top bezel. Huawei and all the rest were recognized this way and something about the look of the Samsung like this made me get my first phone as one. But would I get a Samsung bezel less. No. It looks the same as others and removed one of my favourite features of their phone, the physical home button instead of giving me more screen but only to put the buttons there instead. I don't get it

I'd love to see bezel smartphones. All-glass bezel-free costly smartphones could easily 'cracked' and be damaged! If we're to go bezel-free android phones then the companies ought to use masterials that have characteristics of plastics (for d phone front -- instead of glass that could easily shatter in the event of it falling on some hard ground!))

"Meanwhile I would prefer a phone with bezels at the top and the bottom, which will allow me to go though my day hassle-free" Extremely Agree with you.

Useless article, i think. If your argument holds true, then companies selling phones with bezels would be selling like hotcakes. Obviously, it isnt, that's why we are where we are now. If you want a bezel heavy phone then go get yourself a phone from 2015.

We need innovation, and the demand greatly dictates it.

I so much relate with this Article but my problem is simply the Notch, Chin, Glass Design and Lack of good grip. But I guess there's nothing we can do about it. Everyone seems okay using a phone that will definitely crack whenever it falls. Reasons why I love the Nokia 7+ & Pocophone

                      1. Buy a popsocket/lovehandle/ungrip (whatever suits your fancy).
                      2. Install Reachability Cursor from the Play Store (so you can reach the upper corners of the phone.
                      3. ??????????
                      4. PROFIT
                      5. Stop making stupid articles ffs.

Most people use their phone with a bulky protective case and/or a pop-socket though, which solves most of the problems - except the finger-acrobatics.

I still agree that phones need to get small again even though I have shovel-hands: I still want to fit my phone in my pocket! The pixel 3 is one of the most wonderful phones out there just because of it's size.

I want no notch. I don't like compromise. The notch is compromise. The chin isn't. I don't want a selfie camera. I do want a notification light.

But I want removable battery and sd card. You'd do well to push for this. Samsung lately have their screen game all figured out. So small you don't notice

Drop and then broken is just a destiny. Whether it has bezel or not, all can be broken. Nothing last forever.

But some of those phones have curved edges, polished and rounded frames, and sometimes the frame provided little to no grip. All these factors make dropping these very expensive glass devices very likely."

Anonymous, 22 Jan 2019Dear GSMarena, Ever since the bezel-less race has begun,... moreI think this review is just from one gsmarena writer. As a long time reader, i would say that almost all of them are somehow jumper on the bandwagon or fanboys who has less idea of practicality or usability. And most of the readers have very self understanding of the tech stuff so whatever they read thwy tend to believe those.

Sony made the most practical design of the phones and 1.5/2 mm extra thickness doesn't harm the beauty as much the losing thickness harms the battery longevity or the functionality. Yet they kept nagging about the design language of Sony.

Seems like they are one dimensional and trend following reviewers. We should stop blindly following their reviews specially about design. But kudos to this writer for his practical and matured thoughts.

So All "xpensive brands" sales are dropping. And cheap chinese phones sales are increasing.

Now people can enjoy cheaper phones with many good features.

And about sony.. what do u think if i force sony to implement notches or displayholes? Will they do it? Y know they listen to me ;-)
