Opinion: Bezel-less is not the way forward

20 January 2019
How do you imagine the phones in three years? Foldable? Bezel-less? With invisible cameras? Powered by new long-lasting batteries? Maybe. But bezel-less - that can't be the way forward.

Anonymous, 21 Jan 2019Of course you do. GSMA readership is especially regressive.... moreHow's wanting a comfortably usable phone a regresive thing ? If I'm paying a small fortune for one i want one that i like, not one i accept. I still don't like the fact that battery's are sealed in. But i draw the line at crappy glass with a notch and no headphone jack! Also i have big hands, if I grip the phone more firmly my fingers spill over from the sides and press stuff on the screen. This with a Huawei P9 that has some respectably thick sides.

No 3.5mm jack, No Dedicated SD Card Slot, No Side FP, etc. hence their drastic drop in sales in 2018 add to that overpricing their junk phones with ugly design.

I agree, glass is a very cheap material. And they put price on it like it was diamond.

On the bezel-less, quit it! Hard to hold, slippery. Rubber is the way to go. Not as cheap as glass, and you can grip it.

Tranparent LED might does the trick.

i have the one with bezel and less, both has advantage.
I prefer the idea Motorola ARA can instal our own SoC, memory, camera, battery etc.
why Motorola is the one have great innovation, come apple etc do something new useful

                Dear GSMarena,

Ever since the bezel-less race has begun, you have been non-stop criticizing Sony's bezels, saying how they are unapologetic and "old school."
Now you are somewhat praising them? Hmm, that's not GSM arena...

Anonymous, 21 Jan 2019I have an S7 Edge since like 3 years ago and never ever did... moreWhen i see that more than 90% readers agree on having bezel as a good idea, i would say you have abnormal taste.

Bezelless screens maybe they're beautiful but nothing else. Some bezels are useful for practical reasons.
I think modern phones need more battery life and get rid of notches !

                      Totally agree

I want bezels myself. Having an area to rest your thumbs is the best design, it's practical.

And yet almost every review of Sony phones published in the last three years criticised them for sticking with bezels (and ergonomics) even as the other manufacturers pared off bezels making them unusable.

                            Umm...
Did this writer just get hired by GSM Arena? Where was he when all those articles chastising phones for having bezels were being written?

If there'd been this much honesty in the articles written starting from two or three years ago the manufacturers might have taken a step back and reconsidered this nuisance of a design.

Trollhammeren, 21 Jan 2019i wholeheartedly agree with this ...Of course you do. GSMA readership is especially regressive.

3 things phones needed, more ram (basically performance), more usable area for the same footprint (Night BtS ratio + foldable), semi infinite autonomy.

They are delivering the first two, they lost out in the third. Yet not a peep from gsma fanatics (that we lost removable batts). Yet they are all at arms for gaining the two things that actually matter (high BtS ration, + high ram).

Basically see where GSMA users agree and do the opposite. Then you have the perfect phone.
