Opinion: Bezel-less is not the way forward

20 January 2019
How do you imagine the phones in three years? Foldable? Bezel-less? With invisible cameras? Powered by new long-lasting batteries? Maybe. But bezel-less - that can't be the way forward.

My goodness! A sensible, unflattering view of the obscene obsession with form-over-function devices on a tech site in 2019! What is this world coming to?
Let's go back to the irreparable beauties (?uglies) with short life cycles and burgeoning price tags.

i wholeheartedly agree with this ...

Have the XZ3 and its bezel less screen irritates me so much that I turned it off on the first day I had the phone.

Agreed with author. That's why I'm happy with my Pixel 2. I just typed this with one hand, my left one!

I'd also add that phones are too damn tall now. They should go back to shorter 16:9. Or maybe we'll just need to evolve longer thumbs...

karokor, 21 Jan 2019It's YOUR fault. YOU all tech reviewers conditioning everyo... moreTHIS! the truth. Thank you for speaking out. Yes GSMarena and all tech reviewers are to blame for informing everyone that having bezels is a CON and now huge screens which our humans hands can barely grip let alone navigate and ridiculous unergonomic devices as our only options in the market

Vegetaholic, 21 Jan 2019I have no issues with any bezeless device as long as it can... moreOr use transparent cases, pretty much problem solved unless you will not be able to put cases on bezeless screens, what would be a problem.

I have no issues with any bezeless device as long as it can use caae on it. I have S8 and never used without pretective case. Case helps to hold it by its frame and all screen is yours. I cant imagine anyone using bezeless phone without a case. One or few drop and your phone is finished, makes no sense to use them withoit case. It partially solves a problem, but only for people like me, who dont care to look at their phone back and embrace their beauty without case.

I agree. I need a bezel or something to hold on to, OR a way to turn off the touch screen just to show someone a picture you took. It's getting impossible to do without touching something that changes the screen.

I watch 2 hour movies & binge watch anime perfectly & comfortably on my beautiful S8+. So I guess u should be fine with the current Samsung flagships if u like watching videos on the phone like myself.

The top bezel previously held multiple sensors.. Ambient light, proximity, cam, ir, and speaker grille.. I don't see how they can imclude all this in a bezel free display

Ferdinand, 20 Jan 2019YES! Smaller phones please. 65MM width max. The phantom tou... moreYou're absolutely right! That's why, after carefully studying these issues, I skipped all the fuss about these bezel-less trends and just got my iPhone 8 256gb with good old home button, 67.3mm width, perfect size at 4.7in and top notch performance. It's effective and you absolutely get things done free of any hassles! All the rest is unpractical.

If your phone is in a case like 90% are, is this still an issue? - As silly it seems to ask the question! But I definitely agree with this opinion though! As much as I agree with a bezel, I do think the notch needs to go!

The architect of bezel-less phones must think that you grab the phone when you are not intending to use it. If you intend to use phone (i.e. calling, texting, playing, browsing, watching), you must pay attention of how you grab the phone and be carefull of it. Drop and broken is just a destiny.

I have an S7 Edge since like 3 years ago and never ever did I have any touch issues with it. This whole story is based on false facts, and really, top and bottom bezels are just useless no matter what.

I totally agree. The top can be bezel-free, but the bottom chin is needed to prevent the accidental touches. Same problem with curved side screen which i have abandoned.

It's YOUR fault. YOU all tech reviewers conditioning everyone that a camera bump or a bezel is now part of the CONS. You should blame yourselves and not the companies. You tell everyone that a phone with huge bezels are less modern and not on par with the competition.

When Apple released the iPhone X with its bezel-less display, you are all praises!
But you forgot how the S8 or even LG phones with bezel-less displays are there but you just keep mum about it.
Post-iPhone X, you criticize phones like the HTC u11 or U12+ because it has top and bottom bezels. You should be ashamed of yourselves!
