Anonymous, 17 Jan 201966.6 is the full sensor. But you lose some MP in the cor... moreTrue, but I believe the full resolution will be used mainly for pixel binning or EIS instead.

Anonymous, 17 Jan 2019Sony is co-developer of Spectra since the 845. The sd650 ... moreFirst one is true. But Sony might use their propietary AUBE™ Fusion ISP this year instead.
Second one is theoretical. Qualcomm advertised the SD650 to only support up to 21MP in order to keep the manufacturers from pressuring it to handle resolutions beyond the said critical point, but Sony exceeded it anyway and went up to 23MP, in which it causes the SoC to overheat so easily, and now has been a lesson for them to lessen the resolution a bit.

hmm, 17 Jan 2019What are you on about ? My mother needs soon a new phone an... moreI get your point, that your mother has a different purpose of using a smartphone, and there's nothing wrong with that.
The point where you get it wrong is acting like all people are actually good enough with such piece of hardware for 4-5 years.
First, I never talked about middle class people or what, and I also belong in that group, I will admit. I don't get how you got such idea from a basic statement like magic.
Second, there are people who are capable of purchasing new phones every year, heck even every month, so let them be that way.
Third, Sony made their compact phones with flagship hardware (sans X Compact in 2016) to ensure that they would last for a really long time. If you don't think the XZ4 Compact's hardware is unnecessary to pay over $500 for it, then there's the Z5 Compact from 2015 that's about as low as $200 already. Don't tell me that in 4-5 years, you weren't able to save that much cash (unless of course you have no source of income or are investing in a lot more important things that almost leaves you nothing left to save).
Lastly, nobody told your mother to stay with that phone for years. Nobody's stopping you or your mother to upgrade, it's normal. It's time to accept that we are no longer in the same era where phones today would be good for the next 5 years and would remain relevant.
Just to take things into perspective, if you really don't need the best of things right now, then you should save up a lot of your cash and settle with an iPhone 3G instead.

Just having a beer, 17 Jan 2019Considering that Lumia had 41MP in 2013? With much less pow... moreRight, that 41MP sensor, which the hardware requires at least 5 seconds to process the full resolution image.
Even the Kirin 980 still takes some time rendering the 40MP image of the Mate 20 Pro, what more if we still add 26.6MP on it?
This is best operated in lower resolution, and high resolution may just be limited to around 20 to 30MP to keep the stability and speed, because Sony prioritises speedy capture times.

Ellio74, 17 Jan 2019The regular XZ4 looks really great according to the leaks, ... moreIf the smaller XZ4 Compact has the jack, then obviously the bigger XZ4 will have it too. It's not like Xiaomi with their Mi A2 series, the main phone having less impressive screen and battery, as well as no headphone jack as compared to the Lite variant.
About the XZ4's main advantage would be the extra 2 cameras, but I think the IMX666 would be very capable enough alone to take great photos, while the XZ4 with three cameras will just take everything to the next level.
The Compact does look dated, but I think it was intentionally made in that way, since a small phone would be hard to handle without some bezels to hang on it.

Sony is not about dirt cheap phones. There Are enough of those allready in the market. We need another quality brand to make Also smaller phones. Apple did have SE series, but no anymore. Sharp did have smaller phones, but you can not see them anywhere except in Japan. The quality small size phone is rare piece of hardware indeed...

And the specs are quite different between the Compact and non Compact: headphone jack, multiple sensors (which is understandable).

                              I am waiting!

It does kinda make sense as a midrange, using one of qualcomms excellent chip in the higher end 6series or 7series.
They could still add that 48mp sensor.

But still the new compact does need tele sensor and slimmer bezels to capture the market. Unless they could price it very competively, but Sony will most likely not be able to do that.
