17 January 2019
There are some exemptions, but from August 1 all new apps and app updates will be required to support 64-bit phones.

Android 8.0 Oreo is 64bit right?
Or is it just a hardware side change and not limited to OS?
I have SD821 powered device which is a 64bit processor but no idea about Oreo.

Older phones will never be "terribly obsolete" in only 2 years time, until 2021!
Many older users will never ever buy a new phone again, that is often for decades, because they can still be used for phonecalls and sms and even for browsing on Internet! Today's consumerism must stop, the planet Earth will not survive if we do not stop replacing things that do not really need to be replaced!
I love some older games that have been abandoned by the developer and will never ever be updated to 64-bit!

              then yes...

And it's not an "Android" problem. It's the Android OEMs' problem. Huge diff. Any 2 year old droids with available 3rd dev support can run on Pie so the option is still there.

What nonsense you are talking about, iOS12 supports iPhone5S onwards. Its Android that is fragmented, buy hardware then dump it in a year or 2's time thus creating more unwanted unnecessary pollution and electronic waste.

reminds me of the most terrible investment I made in 03/2018, the moto g5s which came with nougat 32-bit, later in 2018 it received pie but even 32-bit. if I only knew before it's lenovo now.

Kiyasuriin, 17 Jan 2019Sweet! 64bit is easier to work with for me.Still, it is sad to see the demise of 32 bit apps that came along with us during the long history of Android. The creator of Android OS Andy Rubin would be sad, but change has to come, nevertheless. At least it is still better than iOS "close-sourced" which simply kills off 32 bit hardware & software support when iOS 11 came for PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE, without thinking of long-time customers. Even their 32 bit apps in the app store have been "hanged by the rope".
