India's Phased Manufacturing Program and a 5% tax duty on open cell LED panels are to blame.

Why don't people understand, this is a good move by Indian government many foreign companies will be forced to set up their manufacturing (not assembling) units in India. Till now they are fooling Indians by saying "made in India" but in reality they are only assembling in india. This will create more jobs in india. Because china and America is saturated with Smartphones, sells of smartphone is decreasing there on YOY basis but in india its increasing on YOY basis (due to middle class boom and only 40% Indian is using smartphone till now) so there is very huge opportunity for smartphone companies in india in near future that's why they can't leave India and have to follow government rules for setting up of manufacturing units. Every nation puts its people first whether it's china, US or India. There is nothing wrong with it and one more thing companies will first oppose this move because of cost and their comfort but if government stays on its decision they have to change accordingly.

I'm indian and I am sorry for giving my country to an 68 year old stupid person

Typical backward economy policy, hope all big corporation boycott India, let them enjoy there high unemployment rate, Samsung can always invest in Vietnam, Philippine, Indonesia.

Sukant.0503, 22 Jan 2019India is corrupt...grow up boy...stop generalising..this st... moreWithout the IP, Tech Brains, Manufacturing expertize in making Displays, Memory, SoC etc...you can't start manufacturing locally. You need many other supporting infrastructure for such heavy investments like making Chip fab units, Display manufacturing unit etc....you need to assure them there will not be any changes in the legislation once government changes etc....With thriving corrupt eco-system, this is next to impossibility. Your current government may be good or having good intentions but corporations will have to look beyond present ruling government establishments for making big investments.

Local manufacturing is gone out of the window without competing engineering and research for many decades.

everybody who is not following Govt norms, they can go back. Atleast we hope industrial pollution will be less.

That's bad news. Under the former regime of closed economies there was hardly any FDI and lots of companies thought the Ease of Doing Business was rather low for India. The Modi government has pushed India has a very lucrative business for work and investment, pushing it many ranks above all former governments. And Samsung just made investment for the world's largest factory in India. The Modi government should not behave like former governments led by the nepotistic first family of Indian politics (the Nehru-Gandhu family that joined politics even before India's independence in 1947 from the Brits) that solely favoured crony capitalists. It needs to ensure that Samsung and all Major players feel confident of their investments.

Some people here are bashing Modi government, government is forcing Samsung to speed up manufacturing of components locally by increasing tax on imported component so what's wrong they are doing?
Do you know how much profit these company are making per device?Answer is Samsung S9 plus for example is manufactured for 25k so you can imagine how much profit these company are making and Samsung is saying they can't give 10% tax on a single component well Samsung you are welcome to move out of India but remember you will not find cheap workforce any where and you will lose Indian market for increased phone price if not manufactured locally .

Samsung is already equipping their flagship with inferior exynos processor which results in poor battery life in India why can't they give snapdragon for India users, also Samsung don't exactly sells phones for cheap price in India.
If they move out from India their phone price will increase more and they will lose Indian market for sure.

This policy from Indian Government is against WTO rules. You can't arbitrarily add tax to imports. Korean Government should take action on Samsung's behalf and drag Indian Government to WTO.
