Meizu Zero debuts with no physical buttons, speaker or charging port

23 January 2019
Meizu announces the first phone with no ports or buttons.

Sort by:

while it's innovative, the lack of pogo pins (which don't need ports and are external) as alternative to wireless charging for data transmission and charging would be better, a special charger and data dock could be used as well, also an additional portable battery case/clip on could be used as well

also means no real way of charging on the move or using any portable chargers

but it's a interesting development

      Basically best phone:

      No ports (like this one)
      No bezels (unlike this one)
6 incher (yet smaller than iPhone 6 due to "no bezels)
Replaceable back (that can plug to the wall and charge)
2 backs in fact included for the above reason alone (one is used while the other is charging)
Service port below the replaceable back
Dex like use (when the USB port is bare, ie the back is out)
Undersceen sensors (cameras, fingeprting, etc). So that to be truly bezeless.
Tiny embedded battery (to keep the lights on when swapping backs)
Fast charging for the backs (30 minutes 100%, 5 minutes 15%)

Just do it! (Only keep the good ideas of the past few years).

Anonymous, 23 Jan 2019Carrying around a usb charger is already a pain, carrying a... moreThe back of those phones should be replaceable. That is the only way to have infinite battery (charge while using) and also carry an a extra battery w you.

Wireless charging is a gimmick since it is still wired like any other charger to the wall.

The only (truly) wireless charging is replaceable backs (you can charge on a different room if need be)

Look like Meizu 16th without any button...
I like that selfie camera in the center...
Now this phone is true symmetrical...

This is where Apple wants their iPhone headed to. Button-less.

I do not like this idea one bit. We now have to depend on the touchscreen in case it freezes. Not practical.

so how would i plug this in to use android auto in the car?

This really came out of nowhere, I'm surprised it stayed completely under wraps for so long. Anyway, Meizu always seems to be one of the more interesting Chinese companies; I like the style they have behind their designs.

So if you brick your phone... how do you use ADB and Fastboot without USB. (I'm aware you can ADB through wifi...). It would be interesting to flash files through wifi/Bluetooth when in fastboot mode.

I have always been curious about this concept. Obviously this is just an experiment, but if wireless technologies advance as quickly as they are, this could be more widespread in the future. I do prefer more ports and the ability to switch SD cards and SIM cards, but experimenting is good for the industry.

Carrying around a usb charger is already a pain, carrying around a custom wireless charger would be wayyyyy more annoying.
It's a cool device this Meizu Zero. Something I believe Apple would probably be doing soon too to lock people in further, especially with wifi 6 and 5G around the corner now.
But I like my tech hacky and open, I still remember how cool it was to hook up a Nokia N70 to a WinXP PC, with its custom port dongle and Nokia's PC Suite.
We've come an amazing long way because of Android taking over. Now with all this removal of ports, it feels like we are in the downside of a full circle.
I'll stick to wires, ports and buttons. Still I believe one day truly wireless setups will make a phone design like this the default instead of niche.

as long a it has decent battery and large enough storage then it looks pretty compelling to me

So they made the device sleek and almost seamless by removing the buttons, ports and most of the holes. And even after all that, nobody looked at the back and thought "Hey, this camera bump is a big ugly wart, maybe we should make that flat as well". What a joke.

                                  So, is this even repairable?

I'm curious what it would be like using it everyday because it looks like a meizu 6th w/o I/O

Anonymous, 23 Jan 2019They are capacitive buttons, most likely just drawing power... moreWhy add another step to the process, evolution is about streamlining things to make life easier and better. That's why we have these pocket computers in the first place.
