This might be a stupid question but 3360x1440px doesn't make 21:9 ratio right?

Shui8, 31 Jan 2019Its 2019. Where gesture control becomes mainstream. Based o... morei currently am using pocophone f1 so i am aware of gesture controls as i had the nav buttons turned off the moment i first turned the phone on. prior to this i had a note 8 and razer phone which i used with, yes, a sidetab app i paid for to pull up various system functions and even apps. with the razer phone, i also hid the nav buttons thru adb and paid for an app for gesture control. so, you can't say i haven't used such features.
now, i am talking about navigating thru a specific app or function- let's have gmail as an example; say you have your inbox open and you are trying to reach for the top of the list, sure you can shrink the screen for your thumb to reach it but after opening the message you have to go back to stretch the screen because, hey, you have a big screen why not utilize it, right? then you close the message and go back to the inbox then repeat the same thing for the second message on the list. i am not complaining it is alot of work, but that basically defeats the purpose of ui or ux- designing a product for human consumption should revolve around the existing limitations of humans and how to make the experience better; the product should adapt to the human not the other way around. intuitive and usable is what sells, not experimentations into something that has not been proven to work yet.
sony is no stranger to experimentations but ending up losing- i.e. betamax, mini-disc, etc. it really is a wonder the brand is surviving this long in this mobiles war, given that it has not been in good shape for several years now. i honestly would like to see sony rise again in the smartphone war because, as i have mentioned in a previous comment, i love their smartphone designs and i grew up with the brand. when i was a kid i had a collection of their vintage walkmans and discmans, my parents have had two of their rack mounted hifi systems, we have had several tvs from them, etc. but this is just a disappointment.

Anonymous, 31 Jan 2019Don't know if that will become a reality, JDI is struggling... moreChinese LCD panel makers not interested in any tier-up with JDI.
According to nikkei.com (Dec 14, 2018):
JDI logged a fourth straight year of net losses for the 12 months ended March 2018. The company stated in a restructuring plan announced in August 2017 that it will seek outside funding through alliances with global companies.

Based on earlier leak of new XZ4 launcher, u can see a floating side tab, that definitely useful to pull notification down, especially on a tall display XZ4 has. They just didnt make the phone, they also need to think about its functionality on each design.

i so love the aesthetics and design language of sony designers and engineers. the boxy thing, the simplicity yet with sophistication and their color choices. its very unique. sony focuses their phones about media. i absolutely love their music app. i think no one can match that. but i admit that sony kinda lacks the prowess of their camera department. i mean, huawei is not so popular at first but how did they came this far? because they focus on the camera, coz majority of the consumers, camera quality is the main seling point if you're looking for a phone and also selfie thing. i love the tech of their camera when doing video, because of their stabilisation but when taking a picture, its not their best. you cant have it all, but i just wish sony will focus in their camera department to attract consumers. one thing is that, xperia is very good with the battery. i still have my xperia z2 and it lasts 2 days. and what i am so amazed about my xz1 now is that, i can use my phone for 2 days with 6-7 hours SOT doing my normal staffs like cam, music, browse, calls and text. To think it ONLY has a 2700 mah capacity of battery. thats why i am so amazed. thers so many about sony phones i so love. Best of luck sony. I will still be your fan no matter what. waiting for xz4.

Shanti Dope, 31 Jan 2019And it's because it's intentionally made more on landscape ... morei did acknowledge that android have had this for years and even mentioned that it was samsung i think who pioneered it in 2014 with the note 4. i have used it alot on my note 4, note 8, and now on pocophone f1 (this was not available on the razer phone). the problem is that this really is not intuitive- having to shrink the screen just to reach for something then stretch it back up.
and to the other person who said i am a samsung fanboy- yes, i was but not anymore after they stopped giving options for flatscreen flagships. prior to being samsung fanboy i was a sony (sony-ericsson) fan- my first ever smartphone was their windows powered xperia x1, then when android happened i bought their x10i, ray, arc, and the active. right now i am more of a razer fanboy, although not that much because my razer phone had to be sent back for repairs due to screen issue. i have started using the pocophone f1 since the weekend, so tomorrow i probably will be a xiaomi fan. see, my comment was not about fanboyism- it is about usability. oems should not make worse something we already are struggling with; devices they produce should follow our limitations as humans, and not have us adapt/evolve instead to what they wanted. otherwise they just won't sell.

Shanti Dope, 31 Jan 20191 - "shrinking of the screen and app shortcuts have been in... more3 - "besides, software shrinking of screen is really not intuitive at all since you most likely have to switch between the shrunken and stretched screens frequently."
----Then don't get a phone that's 6.5" in size in the first place. Sony's trigger of one-hand mode is as easy as swiping your thumb across the bottom of the screen, which is also a very hard duty for you, I believe.
4 - "there were devices before with this very tall aspect ratios- like the lg chocolate and some of nokia's music centered phones; sony should have taken the cue that those did not sell very well because of unwieldy dimensions."
----Hmm.... Sharp Aquos Crystal also didn't sell well in 2014, but the Xiaomi Mi Mix did, so it's basically a "It won't sell well unless the popular kid does it."
5 - "sony wanted to be different but they have taken the wrong turn here."
----The only wrong turn that they might've done again is the marketing, but this phone is just perfect in every way you look at it. Let's just say that this phone isn't exactly made for you, but you have to remember that this might be the only flagship of 2019 with no screen cutout bullsh*ts.

s-pen pusher, 31 Jan 2019shrinking of the screen and app shortcuts have been in exis... more1 - "shrinking of the screen and app shortcuts have been in existence forever in android. if i remember it correctly, since 4 years ago with samsung we are able to shrink the screen to a workable size."
----You already stated the solution to your own problem, so what's the big deal?
2 - "then here you go with sony increasing the height even further by introducing the tallest aspect ratio yet- 21:9. nevermind about handling of the device because of that thick chin and forehead, this aspect ratio would make the device look like a remote control wherein at least with remotes it is made of plastic and you can easily just slide your grip up or down to reach for buttons."
----First, who told you that the XZ4 will have large bezels? The one you're seeing in the article is the XZ3, which in itself is quite comfortable already. Second, don't take the increase in aspect ratio as increase in overall device footprint. Mate 20 Pro is also 6.5" tall, but I don't think you have any problem handling that green-screen monster, so there shouldn't be any problem with this one, given it's just as tall but much narrower (better for grip).

s-pen pusher, 31 Jan 2019you got this all wrong- it is not about content aspect rati... moreAnd it's because it's intentionally made more on landscape use, and even for vertical use, it allows more contents to be viewed.
As one person have already said, there's already a one-handed mode operation for Android devices, so I still doubt your thumb couldn't reach the top of a 5.5" 21:9 display (when it's in one-hand mode).
