This is so exciting. A glimpse of the phones of the next decade. Look at these devices like the first iPhone. Clamshell phones had dominated the market since the early 2000s and while their form factors remained fairly similar, the late '00s brought innovative designs from sliding qwerty keyboards to resisitive touchscreens. It took smartphones several years to phase out the older clamshell phones and since 2011, capacitive touch screen only phones have risen to prominence. We are seeing the same trend in the late 10s with the death of the bezel and bigger smartphone screens. Looking into the future, these mobile devices will continue to grow in size and thus other form-factors will emerge. So when you see such innovative devices being made, rest assured that these will be the devices that power the next generation.

Lol AR is so corny and ancient looking (from the get go). It is embarrassing even to advertise the damn thing. I never understood how people can be blindsided by such a wholly bad idea.

sr777, 01 Feb 2019Microsoft's hololens was great when it was introduced back ... moreExcept Hololens hasn't been publicly released after 3 years of its launch because it targets a niche market and is expensive hardware. Adoption rates would be too low for a public release and MS already had WP for that lol. Foldable devices aren't available to the public yet because the tech is still in its infancy, but phones adoption rates wouldn't be an issue. It's not creating a new segment of tech, but instead a new segment in phones, which are widely used. If the tech is perfected in less than a year you could expect it by 2020. Or if it isn't, 2025 who knows.

I guess this is a big challenge for Samsung considering foldable phone isn't for everyone. Not from price perspective, but how people treat their phone. Because it will be hard to make a case for it, also between metal and glass chassis will be a hard choice.

sr777, 01 Feb 2019Microsoft's hololens was great when it was introduced back ... moreEh, I give it like... Maybe 3 years? That'll allow for adequate time for the prices to fall and for the tech to mature, don't you think?

Microsoft's hololens was great when it was introduced back years ago. Still it's not available for the general public. I expect the same with foldable phones. They won't be ready for the general public for a long time.

No wonder Android world did not pursue much on Tablets since this is going to kill many form factors in one stroke if it gets implemented properly.....Probably 3rd generation Foldable Devices from Samsung would be a better bet provided they thought through about prices. They can't just start at $1400 and keep increasing every year to reach $1700-1800 later....that sort of prices will be difficult to substantiate for normal buyers. Hope they thought through the product roadmap, pricing strategy and usability aspects....

I'm excited to see how Samsung implemented their foldable phone. Maybe if they included an s-pen there I'd consider it somewhat. The high price almost certainly ensures I'd be one of the very few who would rock it.

What I see is concepts and nothing leads me to believe that that's actually the foldable phone we're about to see. Actually I'm pretty sure it isn't.

The Ad was disappointing, but if the phone can do everything the BEST tablets can do, it will be a winner. If they can fix the durability issue and the perfect merging of content across the 2 screens, then they could have many different sizes for this. It could transform the smartphone industry just like the first iPhone did. Durability is the key word for the moment.

Oh hey, a full 2 seconds of... the backside of the thing, mostly. Yeah... wake me up when I can actually buy it - no, I mean when _I_ can actually buy it, which is probably five years after the first commercial launch, which is still hell knows exactly how far (yes yes yes, "right around the corner". As it has always been. Too much "wolf crying".)

But of course not unexpected for the first version(s) of something.
I guess we need the three part Z-folded device, that can also close on it self like en "e" before it get really interesting for a broad audience.
