That makes sense considering the ridiculous price inflation of non Chinese brand flagships. They used to cost 1/3 of my monthly pay, now they cost more than I earn in as much as I earn in a month with the S10+ and future flagships costing more than I earn.

Considering 90% of all commenters on English speaking blogs like these are swearing by brands like "Nokia" and Sony, it's always extremely surprising to see they're in the 1% or "other" tier.

I guess as a european I must be part of this statistics... And it's not just the price.
I've been a loyal samsung customer and still think their amoled screens are the best. But I can no longer buy their flagships (the last one was Galaxy Note 4) because they impose curved screens that are fragile (you can break one with a single drop) and have annoying glares under the sun or lamps.
Those like me - that need FLAT SCREENS - are completely ignored. Same thing like the removable batteries. And not only this - they also raise prices to insane levels!!! No thanks. The thing is when there are so many sacrifices to make, we'd better make another major one and ditch samsung for chinese brands at all. In my case I had to buy Huawei Mate 10 as a replacement for Note 4 that suddenly died with all its data.

They're gaining market share in high-income advanced economies too. Reminds me of how Toyota and Honda redefined the car industry back in the 80's and 90's.

Kuba, 15 Feb 2019Essential phone bought in 2018 for...150 USD !! second hand... moreEven with the GCam port my Essential's photos are a far cry from what my previous GS7 shot. That and the much too scratch prone screen are my only major complaints though; otherwise it has been fantastic.

Anonymous, 15 Feb 2019On a same note I should add, since these phones are older i... moreThats why i buy cheap midrangers.
All say that you can get old flagships for that money but why you then have this year flagship in your pocket ? :D Why not buy one for your self if you can. I want a new phone then i buy new budget midrange phone so i have power to run everything for 2 years and then buy new one cause everything get slow and battery lose power. In the range of 150 to 250 euro you get from xiaomi everything from SD636 to sd660, sd675 and even sd710 and add more 50 and get sd845 if you interested in gaming and can do editing even on it.
So why are branded like sony, samsung, nokia, apple and so on so special to pay more money and dont get even more features. Still use 2-3 years it same like you would with the mid range phone where you dont edit or game. And basically all is coming out of one or two major factory companies.

Garth, 15 Feb 2019Huawei and low prices? ARE U KIDING? Now the are more expen... moreThey were before Xiaomi got in the market. Now they are same like any other brand that ask for profit cause you know it's placebo effect that if it's more expensive then it must last longer and be all good.

I'm waiting on S10. Bought a midranger once (Xperia XA) never again, only flagships. I think people who complain 99% doesn't or cant afford a new flagship every year or two.

This article is SUCH A LIE!!!
I live here in Europe and we do crave for low priced devices. Western Europe maybe goes for Ishit and Samsung devices but an entire eastern part fancy a well build, snappy device on a budget which we still don't get here! Im not bragging about cheapest devices ever invented but likes of meizu, oppo, xiaomi which currently offering only lower end devices.
Half of europe could eaisly afford ie. xiaomi mi 8 but there are nowhere to be found.
If youre trying to sell a tractor to a race driver then there are your resoults!
Peace

Anonymous, 15 Feb 2019HMD Global is the weakest of the Chinese makers. In Europe, sure.
Also, globally HMD are small compared to other Chinese manufacturers that arent even listed here, as they don't really officially market and sell in Europe.
What is impressive, and/or sad, is that even little HMD and their Nokias outsell Sony, Motorola and LG of the previous mainstream brands.
