Now is probably the best time to look for a purchase. New flagships are just around the corner and the last year offerings will start hitting the bargains. Mi8 for example can be found for 350$ for example and the 1000$ flagships are definitely not 3 times better.

We geeks are all passively overlooking a certain demographic of phone buyers - Women (non geeky types). I'm not a anti-feminist nor a hater, but looking at the buying trends of my wife and in my friend's circle, i can clearly see the 'Social Validity' factor playing a major role than core specs. They would never buy, say a Pocophone or any Honor or any Moto phones solely because of this factor. I've lost every logical argument about phones with them, the end comment will always be like 'Ya, i know it's a better phone but i want only Samsung' I myself am using the OP3 for the last 2.5yrs and hoping to hold on for another 2 yrs. My wife's aging J7 Max (double face palm) is due for a replacement and after all her specific filters, considering my persistent inputs, she's now narrowed in on the Note 8. I know its not the best, but its the best compromise we could ever make without hurting anyone's feelings, considering i was hell bent on getting her either the 6T or View 20 or Pixel 2XL and she was fixated on Note 9 or S9 Plus or iphoneX. These 'Premium' brands very well know the psychology of this demographic and position their products as a lifestyle thing thereby charging a premium. I hope i'm not the only one feeling this way

And the tendency will continue. Overpriced phones and greedy companies or brands will decline their sales as now people know better what they are buying, the excuse of scare people with shitty politics is gone. The greedy ones or adapt themeselves and their prices or will dissapear of the mobile market.

Anonymous, 15 Feb 2019Exactly. Bought a new HTC 10 few months ago for ~150$ from ... moreOn a same note I should add, since these phones are older in date, the battery takes a hit even if it was on shelf all the time. My HTC 10's battery went down from 3000 mAh to around 2300 mAh straight out of the box... If the battery was a main factor, I'd still probably go for a midranger.

Yuri84, 15 Feb 2019You should be smart with your money. Don't purchase latest ... moreExactly. Bought a new HTC 10 few months ago for ~150$ from ebay. SD 820, 2k screen, absolutely insane build quality (single piece of metal body), no stupid notch, easy to hold 5.2" display... These days 150$ get you some tall 6"+ plastic (or even worse, glass) paddle with stupid notch, mediocre display and questionable build quality... I don't think I'm ever buying a mid-ranger ever again.

It just shows that people are more interested in progressively specced and looking phone for reasonable price 150-350€, phones for 900€ with similar specs or ones that offer 150€ like specs for 450€ price are not hot anymore.

g6 user, 15 Feb 2019for any one who still keep a 2016 flag ship I can say that ... moreMy moto g3(2015) is still doing great. Battery back is not the same but planning to replace in authorized service center(hope there is stock) and use it for 2 more years. I don't take much photos or play games. So I am content with my existing phone and no reason to upgrade.

You should be smart with your money. Don't purchase latest and greatest at any price no matter what, purchase a flagship device that is 1-2 generations old, there are almost no game-changing features you'll miss and the device will be almost as awesome as the new flagship, but with ironed out bugs and costing 1/3 of the full flagship price.
You can surely get a "mid range" device for the same amount but you'll be getting a worse deal overall:
a worse screen
a worse performing device (somewhat slower)
a worse camera (I recently purchased Huawei P Smart Plus, it couldn't compete with my S7, and you can find S7 for as low as $180 refurbished or around $300 new).
What you'd be getting in a modern mid-ranged device that old flagship may not have: a dual camera (for fake bokeh effect, which can be pretty nice), a taller screen (a gimmick, IMO, you can't effectively use it anyways since videos will play with black borders either on the sides for standard 16:9 videos and video shows, or with black borders on top and bottom for ultrawide videos and movies), a notch (because we all love the notch, right?).
I'm not mentioning Chinese flagships for several reasons: some are expensive, others have software update issues. Meizu had an issue with Google recently when all google services stopped working for several months (no play market, no uber, no maps, no youtube, barely any viber etc). Xiaomi has issues with weekly updates, you either have to skip updating (go with stable firmware), or be ready to fiddle with your device (not a good idea when you're on vacation, I found out the hard way!). Can't comment on Huawei (P20 seems awesome but still expensive) since I have 0 long-term experience with them. OnePlus devices went from $300 with top hardware to $650+ with top hardware, meaning they cost as much as last year's flagships, which is far too expensive for me. And they threw away 3.5mm jack, which means no 1+ for me.
Now you can make a more educated choice!

Anonymous, 15 Feb 2019Yes, but I think they can do even better. What they need to... moreMore from Xiaomi and Huawei as they sell good enough hardware with low price. Xiaomi better hardware and lower price. Nokia needs to be out faster in EU with new line of phones that are competing with these phones and prices. Only stock android on old model with high price is not for me. Ol model as it takes over 6 months to Nokia phones come in EU market. As they first are for China and India only and by the time they hit EU and Global market they are outdated with there design and hardware and the competition like Xiaomi and Huawei have already new models that have everything better on them for 100 euro less price for same CPU. Nokia plus is only clean android but thats not worth to pay 100 plus euro over other brands that have same hardware or similar for just Nokia brand name and clean android.
Btw it seems like the USA hate for China will effect on phone market too if right now they whine about the spying Chinese do. Like USA and EU dont spy. Every app is spying on you and you leave mark in the internet anyways. So if someone wants to find out about you and know how to middle around the hacking world then nobody is safe. Watch tv series how everything with a camera can be hacked into to see the video and listen the sound. Wasnt it The Blacklist episode where the FBI hacked in the pawn shop TV cam to see and listen in.

Anonymous, 15 Feb 2019Smartphones have been commoditized at this point. Paying an... moreFrom 150 euro to 300 euro is the sweet spot already with CPU's like SD636, 660, 675 and even 710.
These all have everything you ever need.
A lot of people buy flagship cause they think if they pay more it will last longer and is more sturdy or something that makes it last.
I have never had any problems on these low end phones up to 300 euro. And as lowest 100 euro. If i dont play or edit on it, then i dont need powerhouse in my pocket.
These 6 series with these 48mp cameras will be way more then anyone needs who dont play games or edit. On these you actually can play game on even that need more of the hardware so you can buy these even for your kids to play games on.
