Shootout: Nokia 9 PureView gets us closer to the beauty of real bokeh

02 March 2019
The Nokia 9 PureView could potentially have the best scene depth-sensing around as our first camera samples show.

Anonymous, 03 Mar 2019Sony RX1 is pocket cam with Full Frame sensor. You can't even come close to comparing that. The price range is vastly different and there are still lenses in need.
That's a completely illogical reply

And on the very unlikely event of that not being so...oh you mean line every single other device out there it's not perfect every single time??

In the hands on review thry write "But it's really the dynamic range that's the best feature."...here they write it's not on par with... what is going on? i think they should talk with each other before writing down an impression.

ultra-wide-regular-telephoto with a time of flight 3D and monochrome auxiliary camera?
Na that's too normie for Nokia when they want to make a true successor to the Pureview line.

I do like the sample photos posted, but I still think fake bokeh is a joke. I don't want it fake, I want it to be left untouched.

But it's true it could be good for the few that really care about the capacity of the camera to reproduce the reality to have such DSLR shots.
DSLR shot of the olympus on the photo compare tool are not up to date with the new tests too.

iPhone shot of pineapple has no fine detail, too much NR and over-processing, the Nokia 9 retains much more detail and much better colour.

Hi. I'm the one that posted the comment on the other technological advantages of this technology.

Yes, this phone could have had a dedicated photo button, and other controls, and 3D refocusable video. Should have been out this time last year, or now with a Snapdragon 855 which is designed for better camera functionality. But, this is only the start, and not the finish. Much more can be done in the future.

3 different colors across the sensor is actually thing, but as each sensor is viewing from a different angle and direction, you may get misalignment. It really depends if whatever issue it causes is acceptable. For a consumer phone, it may well be acceptable. Same sort of issue with using three exposures on different chips for HDR. Each chip sees different detail from different directions at a point.

It works slowly today, because it is not implemented well. Light has it's own custom chip which should speed things up, and there is the idea that the Sony based sensor modules will have much much faster technology, video rates.

DSLR. It might not he as good as a DSLR, but with this technology you can make the technology nearly as good). I have been involved with and in the camera industry for 15 years when I sought to put together my own camera and at the time other groups started who I gave way to. Around 12-13 years ago after finding out these groups were determined not to give real value, I aimed to do a cheap 3D multipoint camera. Then, the owner of Red, who I had been in contact with about doing a cheap pocket director's view finder camera, started talking big about doing a pocket the come camcorder etc, cheap (so I gave way, this happens the next times as well) but was cancelled. I started talking about doing a 3D multipoint camera cheap publicly, after Red did not seem interested, and pro video phone. Light came out, and Red putt in patents on their system and phone. Red went way high in price for an 835 based phone massively late, with a special 3D multipoint camera module, which should have been in the phone. It turned out the reason they did not talk about the in phone camera, was because it was not that unusual. After some advocacy, they announced it would have dual 3D cameras, but not dual twin 3D camera setup needed to take good advantage of their 3D display and doing post focus, good bokeh etc. I can tell you that with a proper setup and tools they can make a phone give digital mirrorless pro quality in stills and video. So, the technology has future potential (the red phone I don't know, but if their 3D multipoint module does come out, it maybe the top module for results).

The bokeh in your normal phone is rubbish looking. In this phone its not the best, but the technology can make it better.

As long as the technology gets within 20% of DSLR, you have a good consumer technology. I suspect pro camera versions will get within percents in normal pictures, and often be sold in the $1000-$3000 price range.

There are auto 3D TV's planned which don't need glasses, where this filming technology is important. So, next rec2020 HDR coverage, 8k/wall TV more affordable, maybe high frame rate 8k, and auto 3D TV.

What! Did you say its dynamic range is worse than p20 pro. Dynamic range isn't bringing the shadows and highlights to mid level but preserving details in both shadows and highlights. Have you ever seen your DSLR bringing up shadows and highlights. Nokia 9 PureView preserves 13 stops of dynamic range not even many DSLRs manage to do so.

Don't forget that the Nokia 9 actually has a hexa camera (six cameras) for creating the depth map.
