Sony Xperia XZ3 camera fails to impress DxO Mark reviewers, barely beats XA2 Ultra

21 March 2019
The camera mostly does okay in good light, but it runs into trouble in low light and high contrast scenes. Corner softness is a constant issue too.

    Are DxO scores really comparable?
There are phones like GM9, Crosscall with higher scores and a Samsung A8 on par with the XZ3.

Well no matter what Dxo say about the camera of XZ3, Sony fans will still say it's the best of all the best and that Dxo is nothing but crap. It's like they're professionals or something.
It's them against the world. They still can't accept that Sony's camera software is inferior to other flagships (maybe even some midrange phones). Majority of Professionals, journalists, vloggers, YouTubers, etc. are saying that Xperia's phone camera is just inferior to others. Not to mention some OEMs use the same Sony cameras.

Shui8, 22 Mar 2019I think they announce the late score on purpose, dont want ... moreI still don't understand why most companies don't go the way of Huawei and use a 1/1.7" or larger 40MP sensor, or even better a 12MP/16MP sensor, all setups using variable aperture and lenient processing. What do the best cameras on smartphones have in common? Most of them have only one sensor, more notably the Nokia 1020 which has a 1/1.5" 41MP sensor and still holds up to this day.

I mean, the mere fact that Sony isn't even trying that hard to win in camera race and still achieves such a decent score is beyond amazing already

Now imagine the Xperia 1 with similar hardware to something like the Galaxy S10+ but with Sony Alpha software instead....

Shui8, 22 Mar 2019I think they announce the late score on purpose, dont want ... moreThank you. The comments below only reinforce that doubt lingering in my head. Like the head himself admits the fault in their camera and fans now seem to know more than head himself..

Shui8, 22 Mar 2019I think they announce the late score on purpose, dont want ... moreRight? It's like, dude, that ISO might be high, but the entire photo is literally the same you get from Night Mode, except it's just covered in noise

I think they announce the late score on purpose, dont want to hurts XZ3 sales & fans earlier. I believe next Xperia 1 will be better.

All the cons that DXO mention seems to be true, been using a lot of Sony flagship in the past, still their camera algorithm is same old same old. Bad dynamic range (no image stacking), overblown a lot on most situation, especially low lights. Not to talk the amount of noise & smoothening when its going dark. I've told their fans many times, only XZ2 retains natural color reproduction, but after XZ2 Premium, they add a bit of saturation, which is DXO confirms that. The logic here is simple, while Sony using a 1/2.3 inch camera sensor, but they use a small 1.22 micron pixel size on a 19mp resolution (for the sake of marketing, they want fans to believe higher resolution are better). Starting Xperia 1, looks like they play safe like others, using smaller sensor at 1/2.6, but bigger 1.4 micron pixel size at 12mp resolution. That are more balance than their previous setup. On software side, they really need to add image stacking like other competition.

Sony themselves admit that up until XZ3, their cameras cannot compete with other competition, which is confirms the only average quality camera for a flagship phones. Weird thing is blind fans says otherwise lol.

                                    Anonymous, 22 Mar 2019what do you expect?98 ... Better than S9 and OP6.

For XZ Premium they did not testes Background Defocus. The poor excuse was that feature was a seperated mode. But all phones do it, you just need to swipe to right ...

Now they say it did not come pre-installed. Weird because units given to tech sites all had. Units brought to IFA had too.

Review had 4 samples only. They did the same to LG and Motorola devices lately.

Look between 2013 and 2016. The difference between two generations was small for many brands, now one devoce scores 101 then next generation scores 107 or more.
No software is good enough to do it..

                                    Pixel 2 = 98
                                    Pixel = 90

No way the difference is that big.

XZ2 has best samples of your lab test
