Counterclockwise: water resistant phones

31 March 2019
There have been rugged, adventurous handsets since the dawn of cell phones. It was flagship smartphones that made the genre popular, though.

I always thought that Ericsson R250s Pro was the first water, dust, and shock resistant phone... Can't recall that Benefon. But there were many interesting devices in those times indeed - still miss Siemens & Ericsson phones and Nokia E line ;)

And R250s' successor R310 might be the one which stuck in most people's mind as one of the pioneers of that "outdoor compatibility" feature. :)

Spen, 31 Mar 2019"Anything over $200 without at least IP65 is not worth it m... more1. Back then we just had to tolerate that. When my $100 phone died with rain damage back in 2003 or 2004, there was no other option. But in the last five years buying an expensive phone without waterproofing is quite a weird decision.
      2. The phones were much cheaper back then. $200 could get you a fancy one, I got my first smartphone in 2005 for that price.

Spen, 31 Mar 2019So you are saying that you are unable to protect your $1000... moreYou got it right, I buy the devices so they they serve me, not vice versa.
Just a couple examples from the last year for you:
        1. You are inspecting bolts tightening torque on the steel structure at 60m elevation in a hurry before the rain starts. You're done with the inspection as the first raindrops start falling. By the time you descend to zero and rush to the car the only place on your body that's still dry is your head as it is protected by the helmet.
        2. You are a passenger on a motorbike in a tropical storm, someone has to navigate and it's not your driver.
And that doesn't even count the everyday comfort of using the phone during rain or snow or whatever and just not caring. I don't serve the phone, the phone serves me.

Anonymous, 31 Mar 2019My phone will be 3 y.o tomorrow. Battery is as good as day one. Sure. Your magical battery didn't age. Sure.
You do get that this is just impossible? Its similar to saying you met a unicorn.

Anonymous, 31 Mar 2019It's not like the rain is going to ask your opinion. Oh, so... moreSo you are saying that you are unable to protect your $1000 device from rain and that you are to clumsy and careless to drop your $1000 device into a bucket of water. Good for you that you have the money to be so careless with your device.

I never dropped my phone at all and it never got wet in all the years of usage... so I don't know what you are doing but clearly something wrong.

On the other hand, when I made a mistake of buying a Xiaomi phone it didn't get old enough to require battery replacement, it barely lasted an year before a few raindrops got it. And it was an uncomfortable year, because with a non-waterproof phone you have to care about things which are not an issue with a normal phone.

So you say that in the last 20 years people did not go outside of their house? How ignorant.

You do get there are people who would like to buy a current flagship now with the best camera and then use it for the next 5 years without needing to replace it? That is only possible if you replace the battery on the way and with the necessary water resistance that gets ridiculous.
On my current phone I also can just swap out my battery and I already did so. But I would like to upgrade and currently no good (
