The era where consumers pay big money for name brand phones is over.
If Samsung can make their phones more affordable with the same high specifications, then their chances of being #1 is great. But if they can't, then the general public will buy other brands.
Don't forget, consumers are the ones that have the money and the freedom to shop elsewhere. With so many choices, I don't see why rational consumers (excluding the diehard fanboys) need to stick with Samsung unless they give us a reason to.

There are those who charge more than they should.
There are those who use much cheaper materials
There are those who use old stuff (Gorilla3, micro usb) and remove stuff from hardware ( NFC, radio FM) or software ( providing only 1080@30 when cpu does 4K)
There are companies that probably sell your data but sadly none can prove it
There are those that spy on other to steal secrets, so they dont need to spend money with R/D.
Except China and Japan, Samsung is strong everywhere.
Outside China, Huawei is small.

*Huawei* as they these people say the ones who bring the new technology and innovation but The fact is that they don't even have an identity for themselves for example ( edge screen ) no one was doing it but Samsung and now Huawei is just copying the designs from Samsung which is laughable ( a company that knows how to steal that is what I see ) besides their software is shit like every year they release the same software with different numbers only and no huge changes and people are happy with that.

Xs Max costs as much as s9+.
The difference is outside USA, the prices of iphones are much higher.
In many markets ppl pay at least 50% more compared to americans.
Here the Xs Max with maximum storage costs almost twice the note9 128Gb.

I feel like it's more plausible that both will fight over number one spot for the next ten years before the eventual culling of the smartphone market where companies will enter a sort of recession

Apple woll slowly get wiped out. Maybe in 3 years or so it wint be among the top 5 in sales and will be No.3 in profits too, from Smartphones. Tim Cook is not doing a great job, and Steve Jobs left some huge shoes to fill.
