Google admits smartphone sales declined with the Pixel 3

The company cited “industry-wide pressure” present in the high-end smartphone segment as the culprit.

I'm looking to get the Pixel 4 XL at the end of the year upgrading from an S9+ but honestly Google is gonna need to raise the bar to convince everyone with the 4 series. Its a shame that the 3 XL was such a slip up because the 2 XL was a fantastic device that holds up well against phones from this year. We need better fast charging, better RAM and storage, a better alternative to the current notch and a redesign for sure (even just a slight redesign would be good).

    I think $450 at launch would have been the correct price for the specs.
    The Pixel 3s have no wow factors!!!

    Outside of the 'geeksphere', buyers are unaware of the regular software updates provided.
    I use 1st gen Pixel as my daily driver & I keep a look out for any Pixel devices in the wild ... I've personally never seen anyone use it in my office or on public transports.

        well that just means Pixels were not great because they did not stand out. Mediocre spec (in fact bottom of the pack in terms of high-end phone with similar spec). Only thing it had going was always up-top-date software update and camera software (not hardware here either)

        so..
        - Ok chipset (but underclocked)
        - low battery (hence underclock to increase battery life which is just poor decision)
        - bad design
        - low RAM (when competition is starting 6GB + you stick with 4GB..)
        - low memory at 64GB, with no expanable mem-slot

        Literally all other Android flagship at the time of release was better than Pixel in most aspect. Then there is price. Costs almost same as Apple and Samsung flagship but less substance...and you are surprised why it did not sell very well? Not to mention disgrunted buyers of earlier gen (Gen1, Gen2) both of which was plagued with hardware issues. Not sure about anyone else, but in the UK, dealing with Google to get my Pixel fixed was not easy or fast...yet the price is same as Apple and I can just go into Apple store to get it looked at. go figure

          Pixel 3 is old enough not to be sold. Time to launch new phones

              Yup, all the guys in the comment section got it right. Those phones are just too damn ugly. When the whole market is pushing for better screen to body ratio, google wants people to look at its inner beauty LOL. Also the fact that the phones do not go down in price as time passes with oversea prices in the range of Samsung most expensive super hardware phones also doesn't help.

                Its better late than never. Thank you Google to understand; but, please don't make the same mistake for Pixel 3a/XL. Make a nexus version in terms of price. ~$300 for pix 3a. It will smash the South Asian market leaving Chinese junk aside. Unless pix 3a will also face the same fate as Pix 3.

                  Why Pixel 3 / XL is declined:
                  - Low RAM/Storage for a 2018 flagship
                  - Ugly design for a 2018 flagship
                  - A lot of bugs on launch
                  - Not a good video shooter despite excellent at taking photo

                    Maybe if they didn't make such ugly phones.

                      Only if they would give their phones a better looking design and a little spec bump like at least 6gb RAM, with their camera prowess, they would have been pretty much on top. Pixel 3 was ugly and the 3XL was even uglier

                        Apple charges premium price for their iPhone but at least they provide 5 year OS updates! On the other hand, Google charges premium price like Apple, but provides 2 year OS update & 3 year security updates to their Pixel phones. Nokia also provide the same in 1/3 of Pixel price. So why one will waste the money on Pixel phones? If Google provide 5 year software support like Apple, they can justify premium price.

                          The only thing that justified Pixel phone is their unrivaled camera software and the direct update from Google. Also one thing I like is the zero bloatware and smooth stock Android experience. The price is a whole different story. From my pov it shouldnt even cross $500 mark. They also shouldn't tied up their phone to a specific carrier if they really want to sell this thing. Tbh, it's barely available in any store unless you buy online. The exclusivity is backfiring on them.

                            Pixel 3 didn't sell because it barely offered anything on top of Pixel 2.

                            If you want people to buy your product, then make it appealing in every sense. Your every major release should offer something new & interesting to your crowd for them to care about it.

                                But of course! It doesn't take a genius to figure out that buying an overpriced $1,000 phone without micro sd storage expansion, without dual sim slots, without headphone jack, without 4000mAh or larger battery capacity, with crippled single rear camera that doesn't even have manual modes, and with the biggest, ugliest notch in all of android world and using the same non-exclusive operating system used by millions other android phones that offer better specs and features for much less just doesn't sell! And it doesn't matter if it's a phone made by Google. And no, even a lower priced, underpowered version of the Pixel 3 won't help. It's the lack of those basic features above (micro sd, dual sim, headphone jack, 4000mAh battery etc.) that kills Pixel phone sales.

                                As I've been pointing out in the past: "Insanity is doing the same thing (no micro sd slot, no dual sim, no headphone jack, small battery capacity, etc.) over and over and expecting different results every time.




                                  Get the taste of your own medicine Google. overpriced phone wont bring you any business as was with hTC. what would you expect when you removed the 3.5mm jack and copied design from apple?

                                        That STUPID NOTCH was the reason the sales were low. It's not difficult to figure out.
