Don't be hating on iPhone 4S just because you don't have it or hate Apple. It has best overall 8MP, best app store with real apps and not filled with junks like wallpapers and UI theme apps, best graphic chip in cellphone; where developers can specifically optimize their games to look better on the A5 SoC, and it's still has best audio output in smartphone with a line out dock, not the poor quality headphone out like most other phones. Most important of all for me is a stable OS that works when you need it to work. I don't want an OS that force closes and crashes daily or battery pull occasionally.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has underlined his love for Android handsets, stating his gripes with the iPhone and why in many ways he prefers Google's OS.

He even claimed voice commands worked better on Android, as does the GPS system, the Daily Beast reports.

“My primary phone is the iPhone, I love the beauty of it. But I wish it did all the things my Android does, I really do,” said Woz.

“If you’re willing to do the work to understand it a little bit, well I hate to say it, but there’s more available in some ways.”

Woz feels the battle between Apple and Android is reminiscent of the rivalry between Windows and Macintosh during the 1990s, when Microsoft dominated the market after licensing its software to third-party manufacturers. The theory goes that Android is doing the same to Apple, slowly taking over through sheer volume.

Unfortunately for the Cupertino giant, Woz reckons it is up against a stronger competitor this time.

“There’s not as big a difference [between iOS and Android] as there was between Mac and Windows,” he said before highlighting Apple's strict app approval process as a hindrance that may give the edge to Android.
While Apple has worked hard to promote Siri, its voice-recognition-based assistant for iPhone 4S, Woz stressed his disappointment with it.

“I have a lower success rate with Siri than I do with the voice built into the Android," he blurted before stating his view that Android is "way ahead on navigation" and slating the iPhone's battery life.

Another reason is that they don't spend millions on marketing like Apple. Second, you need to try Android( at least 2.2). It is open not a " jail" like iOS. You can transfer any file you have on your PC just by COPY and PASTE or by Bluetooth. It deserve to be No.1.

Anonymous, 19 Jan 2012While android is free that doesn't make it a success. It's ... moreSo how many people are ready to buy Galaxy Nexus ? vs people who will to buy iPhone 4S ?

I am pretty sure android is great OS but i cant see numbers or atleast people who will to buy Galaxy nexus or Nexus S. Because nexus also little bit lockdown as iPhone.

I saw many people say "ICS not needed and 2.3 is enough" , So ur next phone will be a 2.3 one ? or ICS one ? Its ICS for sure because we all know new version is better than old one its just fanboyism trying to defend using some excuses.

People buy android because its non proprietary same reason as people love flash.

Main thing is controlled by adobe ,even though flash is proprietary it has tools which are used in diff ways and diff customizations.Same thing with android. But yet Flash is dead end on phone.

Because flash is designed only for mouse.keyboard UI so multitouch UI is needed for flash to work good on Mobile but Adobe has no guts to optimize it so they also gave up saying flash is dead on mobile devices , So they just focus on HTML 5 for now onwards.

But android is first designed in 2005 for buttons UI and in 2008 they changed it to Multi touch support and framework entirely inspired from iOS and one of the creators also agreed he was inspired and there is article in this site too .

and even MS also put Zune on the shelf and they started to revamp the Zune UI as metro UI claiming it as brand new Windows Phone.

No one have guts to make their own Multi touch OS , it takes years of research and also new UI (u need new UI to call it brand new OS and also differentiate it with rest of other OS).

Touchpad , Blackberry Touch OS, Bada , Meego failed to gain momentum (not individually but comparing to iOS or Android).

Everyone company knows how much time and how much tough it is to develop a multi touch OS and bring it successfully to market , Apple and Microsoft nailed it with their both OS , So only way they can market their phones equal to apple is making android proprietary.

If android is also same like One manufacturer control , i will see iOS leaps to 3/4th marketshare which is never possible since android principle is different.

I agree android is great OS but it doesnt mean it is the best one.
Android is less business friendly and also security is low , enterprise markets are adopting iPhones/Blackberry to make their own control and have more security.
            recent articles also wrote same.

Android's approach is "Everyone should afford a smartphone as well as everyone should have choice of hardware they use" again if this statement is true , u face another problem called fragmentation.

Only way to address this is make 3 separate versions of android. One for High end , One for Mid range and other for Low range specs.
But people always want high end software so they fail if they do it.

So they simply say "this is android phone but never say this phone cannot be updated beyond this or something"

and people buy "oh its android phone , i heard many about android , this phone is very cheap i can buy it"
but even though its android its old android not new one.
Apple stopped 3G and old ipod models , so this type of happening is rare unless u buy second hand.

I can show u tonnes of devices which still run 2.1 or 2.2 right from the box instead of 2.3 or ICS.
Even though android is shipping more.

            Active users are pretty low.
Take iOS for example , there is feature called gamecenter and apple reported that gamecenter has around 75 million active users who use that gaming service atleast twice a week.
Imagine how many people still there who dont play multiplayer games on iDevice like business people.

Android never talks about active users , but always speak only activations and shipping volumes because they know too that most android phones are sold to teenagers and people who dont even knows what smartphone is.
I dont say everyone but i say there is a mojority of "chunk of people" who fall under this category.

I can bet most iOS users are rich and professionally carry more degrees than other platforms and many surveys said it too but educated doesnt mean he knows about smartphones. example take doctors or surgeons.
but i bet educated people who carry high degrees have more knowledge on how to treat a device rather than a low qualified person.Somewhat difference is there btw both.

So at the end , u count android is success only because its free to everyone to use it freely without royalty fee to use or if Microsoft force manufacturers on android fee , then everyone push windows instead of android.

            Because every company wants $$$.
Just thinking apple is the only company who want profit is ridiculous every company work for profit even Google. They make lots of ads and also OEMs allowed carriers to adopt things like carrier IQ to ship with android.

Only company/Org which doesn't work for money is Wikipedia , i truly call Wikipedia as Open and best example of Open source platform which is running successfully today.Even facebook is restricted ulike wikipedia.

Apple is good but Android offers an alternative option. Not all people want to spend £400 on a phone. Some want modern features at a reasonable price. Hence the popularity of Andriod.
Even Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak prefers Android.

Wp7 has loads to offer and the beauty of it is it keeps geting better and am very happy because i havent seen one force closer sign yet. I dont have to concern myself with updates or a scrappy market place.

AnonD-9023, 19 Jan 2012Android licensing is free for OEMs with some applicable con... moreWhile android is free that doesn't make it a success. It's a success because its a great OS and people demand it. From a business stand point it makes more sense for manufacturer's like Samsung to sell mostly Bada, since they're already paying for the development of Bada. Also Android while is free to use, cost manufacturers in license fees to microsoft.

You do understand that manufacturers like HTC and Samsung and LG all have Microsoft OS phones as well too right? Microsoft's miniscule market share is because they're slow to the game, their OS doesn't provide any ground breaking thing that isn't already out there, and its not an attractive deal for anyone who already owns a smart phone to switch over.

Being free doesn't mean manufacturer's will start jumping on it, i'm pretty sure what Microsoft charges as a license fee for WP7 is much less than what these manufacturer's are being forced to pay in royalty fees to MS for using android, however Android is a dominant OS that makes them enough money to take into account the royalty fees.

Jimmy, 19 Jan 2012Is Android really free or licensed to hardware providers. ... moreAndroid licensing is free for OEMs with some applicable conditions and terms (same type like the agreement u get b4 launching a software or so).

If OEM signs in the deal , they can ship android for free.

iOS is also free that sense but again its proprietary so basic sense its not free for anyone since it is not sold to any OEMs.

And android also doesnt need royalty fee for hacks but same case of iOS due to law which was made 2010 or 2011 in US that jailbreak is legal.

So both OS are closed platform for customers.

Android is open to OEMs and free to use on their devices.
